I remember a while back when trying to practice, my Chihuahua was in another room in his crate and the sound drove him crazy! Is this bad on their ears? Should I put my dog outside in the backyard while I play?

Dogs should not play trumpet, they would be much happier on drums!

Why do you think the dog goes into the other room? Also, maybe you're playing too loudly.

when trying to practice My Chihuahua

I'm not sure anyone else on TH has ever tried practicing a chihuahua, so we may not have anyone qualified to comment.

I'm also not at all sure dogs that go into the other room do so to avoid actual hearing loss, but this is an interesting humanitarian concern. Is there anywhere the dog has access to that significantly reduces his exposure to decibels? If there is, it would be interesting to see if he goes there, or even he doesn't think of it on his own, to see if he could be taught to do so. This isn't nearly as controlled an experiment as doing in-depth hearing tests before and after extended exposure to your high note drills, but it would still be one indicator ...

I edited my post I forgot the comma! I am not the best at typing but I try to get the point across! And the dog was already in the other room.

When I play, our lab mix comes running up to my practice area, tail wagging, and howls. If the door is open, she comes right into the room with me and howls for a few minutes. If the door is closed, she'll sit outside the door and howl. Her tail is wagging the whole time.

It can be very uncomfortable for your dog if you're both in the same room while practicing. Your dog's hearing is much more sensitive than a human's so he's hearing the upper harmonics more acutely than you are.

My dog runs upstairs and into a far room when I practice. I'm pretty confident that when he's a few rooms away with closed doors in between he's not suffering from the sound level as much as he's bored with the content

Thanks! I leave him on the other end of the house when I am trying to practice and he just goes crazy!

My old dog - shepherd/sharpei/basenji/kelpie blend would lie down next to the music stand while I taught and sleep.

She wold sing with my playing, and that of I other student. the only recordings she would sing with here of Hardenberger. Go figure.

Our current hound - Staffy/Kelpie cross just brings a ball/stick/frisbee to play with when I play or teach.

Or eat dinner

Or watch TV

sleep

mow lawns

You get the picture.

When a dog sings / howls they are communicating, not protesting your musical style...

cheers

Andy

When I was a kid we had a basset hound who could have cared less when or where in the house I practiced. Our next dog (also a basset) sang along for the first few weeks until she got used to it (she was worse when I played the harmonica or when my sister played her clarinet). My current dog, a Lab/Great Pyrenees mix, doesn't seem too bothered by it--even when I practice high notes.

That said, I'd never blow the horn right at the dog deliberately when playing high and/or loud.

That makes sense since a basset horn is part of the clarinet family.

Try playing a trombone if playing the trumpet gets no reaction.

Downbeat, the mascot for our new combo, The Sound Hounds, must like what he hears because he barks on 2 and 4.

my chihuahua is evidently not a music lover and stiffly gets up and walks to the other corner of the house. if he could speak, it would be a single pejorative.

Don't know about your dog, but what does your wife/chick/girl/boyfriend say when you're playing? Do they go into another room, too?
