Bill Cosby. Wow.

What to do? He's a big-time jazz figure.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Zn-P0ZH3_M

Dis-own him? Throw him under the bus? Circle the wagons around him?

Not really a politics or religion topic. But a pretty hot one. Discussion allowed here?

This picture was recently removed from the USS Fort Mandan webpage. Bill served aboard my old ship "The Fort" as a E4, 3 class Hospital corpsman in 1960.

We've had a few senior & dead celebs over here in the UK exposed as paedophiles and so on. Rolf Harris. Jimmy Saville. It's an eerie feeling, especially if you used to enjoy their work.

If it's true, he's a scumbag. But I think the jury's still out. There's got to be something more than just verbal accusations to nail this one down.

It's rather ironic. Just a few weeks ago and before this all broke, I was reading a critique of a new bio on Cosby and the one thing that the reviewer made sure readers were aware of was that the book avoided Cosby's dark side, in this case not rape but seemingly numerous infidelities.

Doesn't look good.

I am puzzled that, if true, nothing was said by any of the women before now. And given the number of women coming forth, surely somebody would have sounded an alarm before now?

It's amazing that Bill has gotten away with this behavior for so long, many people knew of the many victims for years, it seems the press picks and chooses who gets exposed and who doesn't. I guess everything is political. Bill never attacked the right women I guess...... I'm referring to.... Of course....

Some women did come forward before, but it's just getting more media coverage this time around. Check it out.

Hard to believe he's not guilty of at least some of these accusations, given the incredible number of women coming forward with similar stories.

Not to stir up the pot...but I might do it anyway. I personally don't think he's guilty. Now, I have no evidence either way. However, I have known people who accuse others of a crime they didn't commit because of some messed-up sense of entitlement, revenge, etc. Have no facts, so why should I think any different of him?

His current problems aside, the most interesting jazz story I heard about Cosby is that he was a fanatical John Coltrane fan. I read in one of Coltrane's biographies, maybe it was "Chasing the Trane," that Cosby went to as many performances as he could and could mimic Coltrane's playing by singing and wiggling his fingers like today's "air guitar' players. The author said that he was so good that Coltrane would sit down and take a break and let Cosby perform with his band.

I come down (kind of) on the side that wonders how a woman who was treated so violently and shabbily could keep quiet for so long, and come out of the woodwork to pile on only after everyone else has. Still….there are quite a lot of them. Could there be a blue dress out there somewhere?

Sorry that you disapprove of the topic Fuzz--I'll be sure to clear the next one with you in advance, and in the future, I promise to write at least two "best mouthpiece for jazz" and "your top ten albums of all time" posts for every racy one.

I said I didn't approve of this thread?

My point was that you always act like a kid who found his way into a candy store after hours every time a thread goes political around here. I was also saying that I hope, for your sake, that you have some other outlet (another message board) where you can really get your groove on, since your favorite topics aren't allowed here usually.

These new stories that are coming out are beyond a big drag.

Keeping it focused on jazz:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Zn-P0ZH3_M

Did you know that Cosby grew up in Philly with several jazz musicians. The Mushmouth character on Fat Albert is based on his boyhood pal, the great jazz trumpeter Johnny Coles.

Cosby actually made a few jazz records under his own name. John Scofield played on one of them. Sco told me that Cosby couldn't read music, but he knew exactly what he wanted each person in the band to play for their parts on each tune. He would sing these parts to the guys in the band and they would learn them by ear and when assembled they sounded great.

Now who is this cat Quincy Jones? If I remember correctly, his music was influenced by the famous jazzpop musician and singer Eddie Murphy, right?

I remember being asked in my camp application form, "who's you biggest hero?" I wrote Bill Cosby. I was 12. Years later he validated my love for jazz when he debuted the Cosby Show in NBC and scatted his way through the intro every week. Then hosted the Playboy Jazz Festival every year, including the one where I saw Miles play Human Nature and the crowd slowly lifted off their seats, bar by bar.

Sure wish I could take that application back.

something should be said for good scatting abilities. I used to like watching old kung fu espisodes with David carridine. He had some kind of bizzare fetish that ended his life. I still like watching the old episodes but if I dont get lost in the story then I think about that weird fetish. At that point I have to pause the show. I then proceed to my toy chest where I relinquish my favorite extra long western style belt. I then put on some ultra hip and cool rap and r & b music by Mike Tyson and finally start a-commencing to asphyxiate myself.
