I spent some time looking through marches as my HS wind ensemble was in the selection process for our Band Festival performance, and my director asked me to help him look for one. I really am stuck on Oh, Henry! that I played 1st part on in an Honors' band recently and absolutely loved, and the Klaxon march which is just a great piece IMO. The only other one we've read this year is Leroy Anderson's Ticonderoga which I am enjoying on the trumpet 1 part.

Any favorite marches that could be a challenge, or just fun to play for HS wind ensemble?

Washington Grays, National Emblem, all the Sousa ones that have been played to death, Valdres, Bravura, Voice of the Guns, Army of the Nile, Eagle Squadron...those are a few that come to mind.

I’d suggest John Philip Sousa’s The Thunderer, Hail to a Spirit of Liberty, Stars and Stripes Forever, Hands across the Sea, Bullets and Bayonets, K.L. King’s Hosts of Freedom, and Henry Fillmore’s Rolling Thunder.

Best wishes,

Janell

When I was in Jr. High my favorite march was Amparito Roca by Jaime Texidor.

I did a brass quintet arrangement of it that can be heard here:

I hope your band gets a chance to play it!

This is my summer gig: http://www.army-armee.forces.gc.ca/en/ceremonial-guard/index.page (I'm only in the US for school). Favourite marches in the trumpet section include Eagle Squadron, HM Jollies, General Mitchell, Arnhem, Army of the Nile, The Vanished Army, and Gibraltar. Kenneth Alford is the way to go, IMO. I'm not a huge fan of Sousa marches.

Anything but Sousa.

Well, most Sousa, anyway...

That's a good one!

Another favorite of mine, "Children's March" by Grainger:

(what's the deal with youtube clips? They don't work when embedded, anymore?)

lots of good ones - having been a Military Musician I've played a ton of them. Of course all of the popular ones, many of which have been named already..

to add a couple I didn't see: Washington Post, Belgian Parachuttist, and a personal favorite is Black Horse Troop.

another vote for Valdres and Amparito.

if your band has good woodwinds, American's We is a great showpiece.
