As part of the ITG Conference's Research Room I'll be presenting my research into the concours solos used at Theo Charlier's institution, the Liege Conservatory.

Here's the formal abstract: Although trumpeters speak frequently of the “French school” of playing, few are aware that the etude book considered the epitome of the French School, Théo Charlier’s Trente-six Études Transcendantes was written by a Belgian. In spite of the adoption of the Charlier etudes into college curricula across much of the world, the body of work created for the examinations at Charlier’s institution, the Liège Conservatory, remains largely ignored. Although neglected, upon examination these works display both pedagogical and artistic merit. Because of the mixture of compositions by Francophone and Flemish composers, this repertoire is unusually diverse and challenging. The unique nature of this repertoire will be demonstrated by a comparison of two works from the Liège Conservatory to a contemporaneous work from the Paris Conservatory.

The Research Presentation are from 12-2 on Saturday, May 24th. I'm schedule for 1:20. Hope to see someone there!

Thanks to everyone who came out today, attendance at this session was better than we expected. The anthology of these works is the fourth item on this page: http://www.hickmanmusiceditions.com/select2.asp?selection=34

Best,
Matt

AusTrumpet,

Thanks for commenting. Since the conference talk Bert Truax has performed a couple of these and we've posted them to Youtube. Eventually we hope to record a CD, but there are funding issues to deal.
