It occurred to me that I've never heard of a professional black female classical player either as part of an orchestra or as a soloist.

Doing an online search I find some jazz players, not any classical players. Anyone ever heard of one?

My friend Theresa May is an incredible classical player in Cleveland.

She plays with Cleveland Brassworks, which you can check out on their Facebook page:

She also teaches at Tri-C and Aurora:

I have had the pleasure of playing with her a few times, and she is an outstanding musician, in addition to being a very nice person.

Thanks for the reply. Are you aware of any video of her playing? I see her pic at the FB page for Cleveland Brassworks - it's the same as her faculty pic at the other link - but the only video I find of them on Youtube doesn't include her.

Still seems to be a rarity. What I was really thinking was someone playing in a pro orchestra and/or as a concertizing soloist. Apparently the number may well be -0-.

Are you looking specifically for a female black classical trumpet player? Or any female black classical musician? There are more than a few singers obviously. I've known some flutists, clarinet, a french hornist or 2. Can't think of any other than that though. Haven't ever come across a trumpeter that fits your description.

Trumpet specifically.

Exactly as stated. Curiosity.

I didn't realize Nicholas Payton was a black female classical trumpet player.

I was answering this post. I just didn't quote it.

#WAM is White American Music which is the archaic view many people have had and do have of classical music due to how classical is presented in the mainstream.

Curious that there are black women participating in other classical arenas - such as opera and on other instruments, but from what I've found so far there seem to be -0- black women who specialize professionally in classical trumpet.

Would a "transgender" black female, that was formally a male, count ?
Would she have to be named "Katlin"...how about just a "cross dressing"
male? Would that count? What about a hermaphrodite? Would that work?

Somewhere there is a player that would "match up"....somewhere....

Thank you. It shouldn't have to be so difficult to get a straight answer.

(general comment) Now, to the acronym, white "American" music? I didn't know Beethoven had an honorary American citizenship.

What does any of this have to do with being a better trumpet player?

I don't know what you're trying to say, but it's definitely an inappropriate subject for this forum.

Off the wall response but I'm pretty sure there are the exact same number of black transgender trumpeters in a professional orchestra or performing as a concertizing soloist as there are actual black females doing same.
