|
|
Hello everyone!
I'm looking to buy a single hard case for my trumpet. Something I can carry around all the time to rehearsal or gigs. As small as possible, it only needs to fit the trumpet and mouthpiece. Any recommendations?
Thanks!

A Torpedo will give you plenty of protection though you might be looking for something a bit smaller/lighter.
The Walt Johnson singles are more conventional looking, very solid, and pretty compact. I'm not sure that they are still being made but I suspect you could find a new, old stock or a good used one if you looked a bit. |

The fiberglass Eastman singles are perfect. Very compact, relatively lightweight, and quite protective. And not expensive, either! _________________ do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God |

The old style Wolfpak single is very protective. It is designed much like the Torpedoe Classic, where the horn slides in from the end, but is quite a bit smaller. They don't make them anymore, but they appear on eBay every so often. I happen to have 2 and would be willing to part with one, if you are interested. _________________ Steve T. |

I would have also suggested an Eastman, but the new torpedo looks so amazing I would honestly be inclined to hold off for that! |

The Walt Johnson Cases (available as a Single and as a Trumpet/Flügelhorn Combo) provide the best protection available and in the case of the Single and probably the Double, are smaller than a (also great) Torpedo bag (and at least as expensive). I've toured all over the world with my main trumpet in my Walt Johnson case for years with no troubles at all.

(You'll find the cases most of the way down the page).

I have a great fiberglass Eastman single for sale in the marketplace now. It's a real excellent case, and as compact as you can ask for. Fiberglass, gloss black, very protective. Work for Bb and C trumpets.
The torpedobags care very good, but the classic is pretty bulky, unnecessarily protective for most people, and heavier than the Eastman or Walt Johnson options. Their Outlaw singles are great, I use one and it's excellent; moved to it from the Eastman to accommodate a wider variety of shaped horns (big Pistons, eb, rotary, cornet). But the Eastman is definitely smaller, and is a true hard case, ie it's got a shell and can be put amongst big heavy suitcases with no concern (the outlaw I am still "careful" with).

I have several cases from torpedobags and just cant.......recommend them enough! The classic is the way to go, a lot of protection! If lighter is important look at the outlaw or the peacemaker. _________________ Powell Custom Bb

Absolutely agree on the Torpedos, they are GREAT. Now if that new Volpe's Velox would just become available......😉😉

Unfortunately, as others have told me, the Walt Johnson cases are no longer available. Walt told me today that after 31 years of making the cases, he decided to retire the business and return to exclusively playing trumpet for a living. I wish him well, but I sure wish I had bought the Combo Trumpet/Flügel case when I could. And though my old single case is as protective as ever, it's gotten a bit banged up over the years and I'd replace it with a new one eventually if I could. Oh well...
Best wishes,
John Mohan

As mentioned, I use Torpedos, they're great. Regarding the Eastman, while it is a hard shell, IMO it's not rigid quite rigid enough to protect the horn if something heavy was stacked on it (good reason, among others like your horn getting lost, some TSA gorilla opening and then not properly putting your horn back in the case, to not check your horn on a flight!), it does have some flex. Granted, the Torpedo Outlaw that I use will flex also, but in most situations I am confident it's plenty protective.
Still waiting anxiously for that new Torpedo! Pssst, hey Steve....😎

Haven't seen that one, but if it's similar to the Walt Johnson-style Eastman case, (I had and sold one) 275 seems pretty high.

That link (275) is overpriced in my opinion, and has a shipping cost of 87 dollars!? I can get a package delivered by amazon in less than two hours for 5 bucks.....better be 5 minute shipping...... _________________ Powell Custom Bb
