Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions where good grad level jazz programs are? I am currently at North Texas but would like to get other opinions of where to go. Any input is welcomed! Thanks!

I want to study with a guy who is going to kick my ass (be able to do everything on the horn) and also get some professional experiece playing in ensembles. Preferably ones that pay some bread and not just school groups. I have not spent a lot of time working on improv so I would like to be around some cats that could help me work on that as well. Thanks for the suggestions and keep them coming if you got any advice.

Does the last part of your pseudonym have anything to do with a certain university radio station? Or not....
UNT definitely IS a stimulating place.

These days there are tons of places where you can get a great graduate level jazz education experience. Invariably, if I come up with a list I will leave out a number of great schools and thereby offend personal friends who teach there. With that disclaimer in mind...
It is probably important to know what kind of career direction you want to take before making a recommendation. Do you want to focus on small group stuff, traditional/repertory stuff, lead playing, bebop, ECM, Latin & world music, prep for a career as a college jazz educator...?
Every quality school does one or more of these things well. None of them do all of them well. Help me out and I'll try to help you. However, remember that you can get a great jazz education anywhere where there is a practice room, a good stack of CDs, and people to play with and learn alongside. It's mostly up to you. |

You COULD go to University of Louisville (stop laughing!!)
They're hurting for jazz trumpet players, and you could probably get a decent financial aid packet. I've never studied with the jazz trumpet guy (John LaBarbera), but the Jazz Studies program at UofL is pretty decent.
Something to consider....
