i refer you to my book 'one size fits all embouchure help'.
you get thrown in the water with this and you had better be able to swim. each player should form the lips and see how it goes, and look at the different methods and see what resonates and/or makes the most sense. then you had better be ready to change tack when needed. |

I thought I had heard at some point that Maynard had a connection to Roy Stevens. The Stevens approach is almost opposite of what Lynn Nicholson describes as MF's approach to high notes, so if it's true maybe a connection was born out of curiosity of a different approach. Can anyone corroborate this lore? _________________ MF Fan

Maynard did NOT play the Stevens embouchure. Lynn is correct.
Looking at his embouchure tells you that. The lips are uncurled.
Maynard talked to, visited with... many trumpet teachers. Jacoby, Reinhardt, Stevens, MacBeth, Caruso and countless others. There was a connection with all of them but it wasn't as a student himself.
The number 1 reason was that Maynard was always looking for young talent and there is no better way to find them than to go to all of the famous teachers studios.
You will notice that Maynard never ever gave a formal endorsement of any embouchure or any teacher. That is because he knew there was not a (as in one) perfect embouchure.
You will also notice that not one of those teachers ever claimed to help or teach Maynard. If neither Maynard or the teachers themselves didn't make the claim then nobody else ever should. _________________ Clint 'Pops' McLaughlin

I never heard anything or read anything about Maynard studying with Roy Stevens.
I have read about and heard Dizzy Gillespie talk about studying with Roy Stevens. |

I believe Maynard may have sent his son to Roy for a few lessons. I've heard this from a few people over the years. |
