Hey everyone,
I'm looking for a decent flugelhorn to use in a jazz setting.. A friend I go to school with has a Yamaha flugel that he is selling for 900 dollars..can't remember the exact model. I'd prefer a small, 3 valve flugel. Any suggestions?
Thanks again! |

Yamaha would be a good bet, Jupiters are OK too for the money you've mentioned.
The new Getzen horn is getting good wraps, and the Kanstul 1525 (which I play) is great, but they are more $$$
Cheers,

Depends upon the model and what condition it is in.
You'll have to decide how much you're willing to spend, how much you will be using the flugel, etc.
Many threads on Flugels - Kanstul, Van Laar, Couesnon, Cortois, Getzen, Yamaha, Bach, Stomvi and more to choose from.

My budget is under $1000, preferably. I would use it mostly for jazz band, not in too many other places. |

Used Yamaha or Getzen would do the trick, then. A lot of people seem to like the ACB and Dillon's flugels as well. |

probably a 631 or 731. offer $800 and enjoy it! Overall, a good choice in that price range IF the horn is in very good condition. _________________ Blaine

A used Kanstul 1025, Kanstul made Besson, a Jupiter (the model with the vertical valve tubes) all would be outstanding choices. _________________ Brian A. Douglas

So long as it's in good shape and not the student model, that's a fair price. The Yamaha pro horns (631/731/6310z are the older models) are a very safe choice, especially for a first flugel. It's unlikely that you'd regret getting one. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

I recently picked up a used Jupiter off of eBay for around $600.00. Works well. I would imagine that the player's concept and what kind of mouthpiece are used are significant. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Check out the Brasspire Unicorn from Trent Austin. I purchased one for a friend of mine and played it. It's a great horn.

There's a couple ofused Conn V1 at this moment, here on TH and also on e-Bay.All in great condition.
If I remember well, you can get one for about a hundred bucks over $1000. I woud strongly recommand you to grab one of these, you just can't go wrong....you'll LOVE the V1. I use it for jazz and it's just perfect. The Conn V1 is in the top 3 of industrial made flugelhorns. Sound, intonation, valves work are incredible. Don't go further, GET IT! _________________ The least we can do is wave to each other

I've played through the line of Andreas Eastman flugels and I can say they really do play really well, and they're under a thousand brand new. Certainly worth your time to try out.

Actually, there were two Conn V1's for sale on eBay. But as of a couple days ago, there's now one less. It arrives Wednesday.
Back to the OP's question. I agree that a Yamaha 631/731 in good condition could be worth the asking price, and are good horns. The Yamaha 231 would not be worth that price.

The range of instruments available in the US is so different. The flugels I am really enamoured of over here, either used or new, are the old Boosey & Hawkes Imperial like the one I play on. They sell for peanuts here and are french style narrow bore instruments. Thomann make a larger bore flugel (or have it made in China presumably) it has an antique finish and it sells for about £350 new. A flugel as a doubling instrument need not cost a lot of money to get a decent one. The advantage of the Imperial is it takes a cornet shank mouthpiece which can make things simpler. _________________ Bb - Scherzer 8218W, Schilke S22, Bach 43, Selmer 19A Balanced

If you plan to use it from time to time, don't spend too much money on it. Buy a used ACB or get a Wisemann off e-Bay, they are really surprising for about 450 bucks. Don't worry about the built quality, they're built to last. _________________ The least we can do is wave to each other

It is rather shocking how some instruments are much more affordable in the UK relative to their prices in the US. We had a British-born guy living in the US and playing in a band I'm in for a while. He would go back to England from time to time either for work or to visit family, and he would sometimes buy cornets over there and bring them back for band members because the deals were so much better than here.
Hmm.. sounds like a basis for an import business... _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

RandyX....That's only because of an 'unnatural' situiation in UK.....there used to be lots of brass bands each with a flugle and 9 cornets but there are now less that one third of the bands in 1983, so lots of instruments in lofts and sheds......
.........Generally speaking we pay TWICE the US dollar price for most imported (ie nearly everything!) items. It's common for American companies to simply change the dollars to pounds so, extremely unfair pricing policies and the Japs are no better. |
