So I recently bought a brand new Jo Ral copper bubble mute. After about a month of ownage and light use, plating has come off of the stem and there are numerous dark marks around the mute itself. Like blackish gray streaks. It doesn't look like oxidation, it looks defective. I take very good care of this mute. I keep it in a crown royal bag inside of my case to prevent from getting messed up, but none the less, this has happened. Should I just bite the bullet and deal with it or contact the company about the situation (in this scenario, should I contact Jo Ral or WWBW, where I bought it from)? Very much appreciated, have a good one.

Plating? What plating? It is solid copper, right?

Copper tarnishes. Take a look at any penny you have that is more than a few years old. Nothing wrong with it though. I have that exact mute you have. It is tarnished and sounds great.

I've had one for 15+ years and have the same experience. It's dinged up, dented up, tarnished as it can be. Sounds great. And yes, solid copper. It is not plated.

Yeah I think mine is about 10-11 years old. Great investment.

Most folks, including perhaps most notably Bobby Shew on his own website, actually encourage you to beat up a harmon mute to make it sound better. Shiny doesn't sound better. Get over it.

I don't think plating coming off is the same. Pls note the OP only mentions flaking on the stem.

Don't know if this helps, but...

Years ago I was doing a TV show where I would usually get a camera shot ot two per show, and because I play a Kanstul trumpet with a bright copper bell, I bought a new Joral copper mute & had it polished & spray lacquered. It looked great on TV.

This was over 20 years ago and it still has the bright copper shine on it.
