I have a student who is wanting to audition for a youth jazz orchestra. They list in their audition requirements: "Prepared jazz etude or bebop melody of musician's choice."

I was curious if anyone had some suggestions on what I might be able to help him prepare. My initial thought was to work up a nice standard in a stylistically correct manner, but I thought I might get some great suggestions here.

Thanks!

The head from a bebop standard might be more what they're looking for, something along the lines of Confirmation, Groovin' High or any number of other tunes. Sounds like they might want to hear if the student can swing without a rhythm section. Also, lots of jazz etude sources out there. But probably playing a transcription from a recorded solo would likely work too.

Yup, that's exactly what I was thinking, but wanted some other opinions. Thanks!

Easier are from Bower Rhythms Complete. They are called Rhythm In Review and are AABA tunes that work nicely. My students play them all the time for auditions.

If I may be so bold as to suggest one of my own books, The Melody Lingers On is chock-full of perfect audition materials. I know there are tons of great materials out there, but I think these are right up there with the best of this kind of thing.

Of course, I'm a wee bit biased.

They also come with accompaniment tracks. You can hear me trying to play three of them at that link.

I'd suggest Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee" as an exceptionally beautiful bebop melody. If played well, it could be very impressive at an audition.

This is a great series and really fun to play. Includes a cd of world class players modeling each etude.

Actually, "Donna Lee" was written by Miles Davis. Just giving credit where credit is due.

I've heard this but never believed it. Is there any "evidence" of this that doesn't come from Stanley Crouch?

On page 103 of Miles' autobiography (at least my edition) he claims he wrote it.

Miles claimed he wrote a lot of tunes that he did not. For example, "Walkin'" was written by Don Byas.

Thanks for the continued responses. I'm taking notes! I have a lesson w/ this student Saturday, and I'll be able to find out more details, hopefully.

I'm really impressed w/ this young man. He's 14, and has a very mature sound (and personality)...I'm sure he'll do well!

I forgot to come back and thank you all. He played Groovin' High and won a chair. The kid really impresses me. He didn't know the tune. I sent him a PDF lead sheet and a video of Faddis, and he pretty much nailed it at his next lesson.

Anything from the real book or even the fake book would be sufficient
