Doc's superb 60's studio recording of Granada. That F - G trill he does at :29 is so lyrical and clean. Anyone have any insight as to whether he's using an alternate fingering or just 1st - open? Can anyone reading this do it like he's doing it?
yeah, he's playing the trill with the regular fingerings. No tricks. F/G trills aren't particularly difficult. But, of course, it's Doc we're talking about so it's always going to be many levels above us mortals.

Care to put up a SoundCloud example? In the context of the particular phrase Doc is doing would be ideal. Not hard to work out the phrase, however I find doing the trill extremely difficult. _________________ Getzen Eterna Severinsen

Wow, this really takes me back. Haven't heard that in years, although the record is probably still in my parents' house somewhere. My father was a huge Doc fan (along with a lot of other trumpet and cornet players) and I listened to all of his records all the time as a kid.
What's most amazing to me is how great his sound still is today. There's something about the sound coming out of the bell that nobody else seems to be able to do. If you could bottle that, it would be the best selling snake oil of all time. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away."

Yup. Though these days his technical facility is severely limited and he no longer has the screaming range, he still has that "Doc" sound. _________________ Getzen Eterna Severinsen

On my Bb and Eb I do 1-1/3 for F/G trills. Easy for me and the horn, but harder for other people. I don't remember what I do on my other horns, but learning alternate fingerings can help you navigate trickier passages.
