Hello fellow trumpeters,
Does anyone know where to buy brass valve guides for B+S Challenger/Challenger stencil trumpets? Thanks! |

I have bad news and good news.
First, Bach valve guides WILL NOT fit a B&S without some filing by hand and even then are not a good match.
However, Yamaha brass valve guides, though not perfect, require no modification to fit B&S. The narrow side engages the casing very well, however the wide side is a bit narrower than the B&S nylon guides, but seem to work without any complications.
We have Yamaha brass valve guides in stock in sets of three. Perhaps we'll need to stock more if we get more inquiries.
I hope this is helpful. _________________ James Becker

I asked Charlie Melk the same question a few years ago and he said there were no brass guides available.
Do brass guides really make a difference?

It all depends on what kind of response you're looking for.
I find brass guides provide greater feed back to player and a bit more focus and shimmer to the sound. On light weight trumpets the effect can be more striking, especially high trumpets which only require one brass guide in the 3rd valve (4th on piccolo).
The beauty of it all is you can mix and match brass and nylon guides to taste.
I hope this is helpful. _________________ James Becker

A few months back I switched the plastic valve guides to metal ones on my '90s Bach Strad. I noticed a difference, for sure. Subtle, but there. I would describe it as increased resonance. _________________ Yamaha 8310Z trumpet

It's worth pointing out the Yamaha 8335LA does not have brass valve guides like all the other 8000 series professional model trumpets. Apparently Yamaha's version of Bach LT180ML72 supplied with standard nylon valves guides is acceptable to Wayne Bergeron.
Again, it comes down to one's personal taste and what works for YOU.
Viva la difference! _________________ James Becker

I doubt that Bach guides would fit a Challenger since nothing else Bach seems to fit. They made sure that none of their parts were compatible with Bach. |
