Hello THers!

I just tried the TH search engine and wasn't successful. I am sorry if this topic has been hashed out elsewhere. Here goes:

I have been amassing a bit of a mute collection and am considering storing them in Crown Royal bags. I see three sizes commonly available on eBay: 750ml, 1.5L and 375ml. Does anyone here have a recommendation of what would be the most appropriate size? As in, would the 750ml fit a cup mute or a Solotone mute, or would the 1.5L be better?

Thanks!

I store my harmon mute in a 750ml Crown Royal bag.

My Solotone and straight mute go in black Hanes crew socks.

Ah, the metric system and Americans. Ok, 375 ml is about a hal pint bottle or pixie mute size. 750 ml is between a pint and a quart size so most mutes fit. 1.5 l is bigger than a quart. I am too broke to afford Crown Royal in that volume but probably a trombone straight size. Hope that helps. B.

Why is it in 2016 the world can not agree on the same units of measurements for stuff?!?!

I am a bit puzzled. While I do appreciate the effort to help, I can't quite figure out exactly how you deduced from my post that I don't understand the Metric System. I didn't ask anything at all about that.

This is a question of simple geometry...as in, the dimensions of the bags themselves. It's possible and very easy to construct containers of differing dimensions that all have the same internal volume but not be able to fit the same objects. To put it more practically, a 750ml wine bottle won't fit into a Crown Royal bag designed for their 750ml bottles, even though both bottles hold the same amount of liquid.

Now, before anyone shoots me for not making the most practical test, I don't drink, so going out and buying a bottle of Crown to test the bag is not really an option.

Genius!

Not sure. I've been using both the Metric System and U.S. Customary Units since I was a kid, so I don't worry about it.

I bought an empty Crown Royal bag from Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/Crown-Royal-Purple-Bag/dp/B003I6NC58

I keep my harmon mute in it so it doesn't get dinged inside the mute bag. I also wanted to have it on hand in case I ever need to use it over the bell by itself to dampen the sound slightly. Most of my other mutes would each fit inside the bag too.

Despite some poorly informed opinions, Americans are generally quite familiar with metric sizes of whiskey bottles. By far, the most common size for bottled spirits is 750 mL, and any American who buys, drinks, or pours spirits is entirely familiar with that size. Other common sizes include 375 mL and 1 L.

The notion that Americans don't use or understand these bottle sizes is just plain weird. Liquor bottles sized in US customary units have been a thing of the past for more than a Gs (that's about thirty years for you Canadians who don't use metric units of time).

The world has an agreement. It's just that Burma, Liberia and US are stubborn and don't want to play by the rulebook. 😉

I purchased, and consumed two bottles of Crown Royal to get the different color bags. The "Apple" and the "honey" just to get the green and brown colored bags for my mutes.

The "honey" whiskey was just terrible. I mean really really awful. As was the "Apple" whiskey. Just terribly sweet and for me almost unable to finish. However, I did overcome and succeed

But I got my collection at least.

Blue, black, white, green and brown.

If Crown Royal is not your thing Blanton's single barrel bourbon comes in a nice brown felt bag. I keep my stand lights in it. It will hold a harmon/cup/straight mute easily.

I found that the black bag that came on the Crown Royal Black bottle was thinner, cheaper material than the classic purple bags. Was that your experience? And with the other colors?

I'm not here to spoil too much fun, but I just wanted to mention that Trumcor makes really excellent, black velvety bags of different sizes to hold mutes. The large size can also be used as a felt mute, and it sounds fantastic.

They all seem the same to me. I've got lots of purple ones, I'll check the other colors.

As I'm typing this, and going over how many I have (dozens) I may need to rethink some of my life choices

Somebody took the fifth. <Ed Shaughnessy>

Taking 750 mL doesn't provide the same level of protection against self-incrimination, although self-intoxication levels may be comparable.

I inspected the trumpet, flugel, and trombone stands the last time I went to a Tower of Power show, and they were all covered with Crown Royal bags. 750 mL models that had obviously been blueprinted (or at least embroidered). I couldn't tell if they had received precision bag alignments

It's not clear to me where they came from, as the band is generally a dry band; Mimi is a friend of Bill. But he's a sax player. And they did a song that implicitly endorsed drunk driving. What a world!

Store a mute in a Crown Royal bag? I use a Crown Royal bag as a type of "shhh" mute occasionally! Oh - the 750 ml size.

FWIW I occasionally use a standard Crown Royal bag to cover the bell of my Bb. I found a larger bottle of CR (can't recall the volume) and it's bag fits the bell of the flugel just about right.
