Copied and pasted from a 2003 post I made regarding Tony Frucella:
About 2 years ago I had an older woman come in my store and purchase something. I noticed that her last name was Frucella. I mentioned that it was not a very common name and there had been a fine jazz trumpet player that had the same name. She floored me by saying that was her husband's brother. Unfortuately it turned out to be a sad story. She brought her husband in a few days later and we talked for a little bit. Tony apparently died of a drug overdose or something close. His brother blamed the jazz lifestyle completely and was quite bitter. He did not have any recordings of his brother and when I offered to make a copy of his only solo outing he was not interested in having it.
Sad to say that drugs and booze have taken too many great talents from way before their time.

Tony Fruscella was such an underrated player.
He had is own sound, but I often think, Art Farmer, Clark Terry, Chet Baker, Miles Davis, and some clean, smart, west coast "cool" mixed in.
I've enjoyed everything I've ever heard, which isn't much. He had smart melodies in his lines, and communicated so well with the rhythm section. He's bebop approach to my ears, is as classy as can be.
I think a lot of artists are plagued with the "unquiet mind" that comes with creativity. I think being so gifted, mathematically, abstractly, and linearly causes some to become apathetic to the boredom of the mundane "normal people" that surround them and the mainstream, that many find an escape with drugs and alcohol. Which, as is often the case, ends tragically for the artist. |

Thank you for turning me on to him! I can't believe I had not heard of him before.
Also many thanks for the transcription as well. As soon as I heard the cut I ordered his album on Atlantic which is where the transcription is from. There are some beautiful tunes on that album and it has good variety. _________________ Kurt Magnuson
