On certain bands, i played solos up to c's every night. Its something I can do.
But on other bands..not great ones... , I was fired for doing so, and it usually was the lead player who couldn't play up there, who took the initiative to do it.
Sometimes cats without the b's and c's get REALLY uptight about it. More than one player named in this thread is into that.. And Victor..for all he does and how great he is...did have the machismo happening in a subtle way. I can dig that. One has to have the wisdom to play with the cats you are playing with. Victor is a monster.

OK,i`m on a roll! Other great lead players I`v been lucky enough to sit next to;Earl Gardner(Fat sound, swingin`like hell) Byron Strippling when he was free lancing in NY(Fat sound, swingin`chops for days) Roger Ingram; (Chops, swing,DOUBLES) Bob Millikan(Great knowledge of how to make a section sound) Frank Greene(swingin`lead player, great A`s) Faddis(from another planet, without a doubt) Dave Stahl; Great combo of serious chops/very musical/and zero hot dog.Didnt miss many notes that I can recall; Lew Soloff (Swinging` and a very unique lead sound I thought) Another unheralded lead player was Ron Tooley;Loved playing with him,and always got the feeling he wasn't really into the biz side of things, but just played the bell off that schilke! There are many others, but I gotta go hit the shed!!

Of all those cats taking out Milikan..Bird was a great player and a great hang. ,)
And Maxwell..music by the pound cat..wow. And yes remember.
I always thought afa high notes..no one could put them down like Stahl. Just too much other natural stuff not at the right place.
And Jon...not so much the high notes..I mean they are great.. as the focused accuracy. I mean...cutting thru a track on a middle c. Ridiculous.

And just a very down to earth, gentle guy(although with the 6`1'" 250 plus and big bushy beard appearance, you might think otherwise) He really laid it down, and the conductors would rarely look at the tpt section, probably out of fear! Not talked about very much, and thats just plain sad.probably because he usually played 3rd in the tonight show section, who knows, but Mcgovern i`m sure could speak of Jimmy Maxwell..I also played a bunch with Ken Sepe, and roomed with him on a tour, and a really fun, swingin` cat.strong player for sure..Mike,you remember that little Qualla bear fuzzy toy he had mounted on his tuning slide?

I studied with Jimmy Maxwell for several years. Great guy, great trumpet player, as american guy says. One thing that I found very interesting was that Jimmy and Ray Crisara were great friends. I just thought that they were such different personalities that they didn't seem to go together, yet they were the best of friends. Their background was also so different, Jimmy coming up with the big bands, especially Benny Goodman, Ray Crisara's background being the Goldman band, the Band of America, the Metropolitan Opera, and the NBC Symphony. Such different personalities, such different backgrounds, yet the best of friends. Go figure.

I notice Bill Chase gets scant mention in this thread - not a long and varied enough resume?

What do you think of his lead playing? From what I've seen and heard of him he seemed like a beast.

You might want to listen to the old JPR interview with Bobby Shew (a far better lead and Jazz player than most people) with regards to BIll Chase's reputation as a lead player.

I don't really need to listen to anybody`s assessment of anybody..Sorry..i`m aware of Bobby`s playing(he`s fantastic) but when i listen to Bill Chase I am also totally knocked out; Perhaps we all have different criteria as to what`s happening..We have to also factor in if there was a "Dynamic" between these guys,if thats what you were referring to?

If you like a wide cover the band kind of player,Charlie is fierce; Got to sit next to him in a two tpt show for a few weeks a while back, and he blew me away, and was also a great hang; Very Impressive.Just an amazing player

Larry Ford of the late 60's in Kenton band and probably 1st call on studio in LA for 30 years after. If you wanted it right 1 st shot, Larry was the guy. Great range and superb accuracy.

Buddy Childers was wonderful to listen to, and Uan Racey had a big big sound. I liked Larry best.

Im surprised that, other than Victor Paz, many other great latin trumpet players from the great salsa bands have not been mentioned. Ever heard of Tony Barrero? He was a protogee of Victor Paz and a great player with a big fat sound.
