I won't say it happens on it on a regular basis, but it has happened, we have an enthusiastic drummer who occasionally loses a stick. (The chicken wire does stop incoming, not much help inside the perimeter though. 😉). In all honesty, he's actually quite a good drummer who plays with pretty good musicianship most of the time. But as trpt.hick said, a leather valve guard probably won't help much in that case.
At any rate, I've decided to go au naturale (guard-less).😎
