I'm a high school trumpet player playing lead in our jazz orchestra. We want to play a ballad for trumpet or flugelhorn, but we don't have any in our music library. Does anybody know any good ballad features for trumpet. Any composer or style is fine, we just need ideas.
Thank you!

"A Child is Born" by Thad Jones is a beautiful ballad for flugelhorn. You can listen to it on the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra's fabulous album "Consummation."

"The nearness of you" arranged for Flugelhorn by Mark Taylor. Look and listen To the sample on You Tube.

Do you need a chart that is orchestrated for a jazz band and solo trumpet? Or do you just need song ideas?

If it's the former, you might need to limit search to charts that have already been published. If it's the latter, there are a ton of good ballads out there.

We are looking for a piece hopefully written for flugelhorn or trumpet and a big band.

Maybe something from the Hal Leonard series? "Rainbow Connection" is a pretty ballad that lots of people (young and old) will recognize. It's hard to beat a jazz waltz. And it's already arranged with a flugelhorn solo.

For convenience, here an MP3 recording of the Hal Leonard orchestration.

You might also consider Tommy Newsom's arrangement of "Georgia on My Mind" from the same album. I have the arrangement with Doc Severinsen's solo transcribed.

Satin and Glass by Sammy Nestico is a great flugelhorn feature. If I recall, the recording of the piece features Guido Basso who has a fantastic sound on the flugel.
