Earlier this year RCA released another box of classic recordings of the CSO from the 1960's, many of which have never been on CD before. This one features the recordings conducted by Morton Gould, largely forgotten nowadays, but these recordings are a must for fans of Herseth and the old CSO brass. Some highlights are a rare recording of the Rimsky-Korsakov Antar Symphony, a piece that has by and large disappeared from the rep, here coupled with the Symphony 21 by Miaskovsky. Another highlight is the first recording of Ives' First Symphony, perhaps the best version ever recorded, and I certainly prefer it to the later CSO recording with Michael Tilson-Thomas. Full throttle brass all the way! Gould's own Spirituals for Orchestra coupled with Copland's Dance Symphony is surprisingly nice, and there is also a recording of Herseth playing Ives' Unanswered Question. And listening to Herseth and Cichowicz trading solos in Ives' Variations on "America" always puts a smile on my face.

Not a bad deal for less than $30! Buy this one while it's available!

This is truly a "must have" for fans of the CSO. The orchestra sounds fantastic!
