We're fortunate on TH to have Moderators who are willing to step in a remove threads that sink to incivility and such was the case in a thread I started a few days ago about how excited I was to have plans to see the Arturo Sandoval Big Band at the Walt Disney Concert Hall later this month.
Sadly that thread went sideways with a number of comments from people who said they don't like big band or orchestral jazz. And those comments prompted rebukes from still others who disagreed with the disagreers. And so it went until things got so nasty the Mods stepped in.
Unfortunately, Arturo saw the thread and took it personally, which is a shame. He's one of the most amazing trumpet players I've ever heard and I'm surely looking forward to hearing him again in LA.
So, thanks, Moderators, for stopping the bleeding. And, Arturo, if you're still following TM, please know that 99 percent of the people who post here have the highest respect for you and your continuing contribution to music! _________________ Jim Hatfield

I didn't see the original thread. But I can related to what Jim is writing about. I agree with Jim, that sometimes, it's helpful when the moderators step in.
In addition, I've spoken to Arturo a couple times online. And I follow his Facebook feed. We all know that he's a fantastic player. But he's also one of the nicest guys around, and is a very genuine individual.

Yes, thank you.
And I think it's more like 99.99% Arturo.

I remember hearing about one time where someone asked what mouthpiece he played, and Arturo personally to the OP that he replied he plays a Mt Vernon 3C - and then some moron chimed in and argued with him about it! |

Unfortunately, this sort of thing happens often in all public forums.
For example, quite a few years ago, Dennis M. Ritchie (the famous, at least in computer science circles) Bell Labs employee that invented the C programming language as well as much of the UNIX operating system chose to enter a discussion on USENET (a very early form of a 'forum' before web browsers).
It was the newsgroup called comp.lang.c. The topic was a specific detail about the C programming language, and why it handled something in a particular way. The specifics don't really matter here.
Dennis (dmr) chimed in, explaining exactly why *he* had made that decision when designing the language. And somebody insisted upon arguing with him, saying that wasn't true at all, and calling him a moron.
His only response was "Usenet is a strange place." and afaik he never posted there again. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

John Mohan posted a video clip on TM recently of Arturo demonstrating the different sounds that he can get from the same trumpet and mouthpiece. It was a great instructional video - offered for free.
Why would anyone wish to offend a person who unselfishly gives away priceless advice that comes from such incredible experience and talent?
I wonder. How many trumpet players are there in the world who can match experience and talent with Arturo? However many there are, and there are very few indeed, I am sure that they would in no way be critical of Arturo.
If we allow the trolls to discourage the truly gifted ones from posting, there really won't be much use to come here for advice.

I certainly understand why someone of Arturo Sandoval's incredible skill level would bypass this forum if some idiot posted inappropriate remarks.
It's a real shame, but I guess it's just reality, idiots have been around since long before there was an internet. Unfortunately it's easier now for them to have a public voice.

I've been looking for that video you made mention of for a while, but I haven't been able to find it. What was the title of it? I was amazed the first time that I saw it. Arturo is one of the few true masters of the horn, and he is such an inspiration to many... Best wishes to everyone. _________________ Proverbs 15:1

My favorite Arturo video - I can't find it - was a very short clip in which he said that before you practice, before you play a note, you should look straight up and thank God for the opportunity to work on making music, the most wonderful and bottomless artistic gift we have to offer. I'm not a religious person by any means, but I do this anyway, because it sets the tone for a practice session correctly. It's much easier to practice when you do it with a sense of gratitude.
Sorry, didn't want to bring up religion, just wanted to illustrate what a brilliant and humble person Arturo is. His playing has inspired me and now for years I have started every practice session with a look to the sky and a sense of gratitude.
I also love this video:

I PM'd Arturo to remind him that the comments of a few in no way represent the vast majority of people who post here. And that number is dwarfed by the number of people who merely lurk.
I also noted that the negative comments I saw weren't about him or his band but rather were subjective observations from people maintaining they prefer small group jazz. Where the thread really got nasty was when people who disagreed with one another began firing digital missiles. Unfortunately, Arturo got caught in the crossfire.
I hope he continues to contribute to TH because, as so many of his friends and fans know, he's a terrific musician and a great guy as well. _________________ Jim Hatfield

Oops.
It was Jason (not John Mohan) who posted the Arturo video to which I referred:

I've been visiting TH for ~10, maybe longer before creating a profile, and I have personally seen several name players & technicians run off the site by snarky commenters or trolls. Seems there can't be a single positive thread around here without somebody chiming in to spoil the party. I've considered going "radio silent" myself a few times, just hanging around for the marketplace. _________________ New Album "ensemble | in situ" on Bandcamp

Hey, John,
Hope you stay. Love your Website and your You Tube instructionals! Players like you are an inspiration to everyone, especially newcomers who are struggling to turn metal into music. _________________ Jim Hatfield

I've had a couple of pro trumpet buddies who have been run off by trolls-it's important to remember that in regards to the arts, there is plenty of room for different tastes and opinions. Hopefully we can talk about them without getting personal, snide or disrespectful. Music brings people together! _________________ '56 Martin Committee Deluxe #2 trumpet
