Came home yesterday with an entire harpsichord for $100. Have to set it up and see what it needs and I'm not sure who's kit it was in the first place. I didn't argue with the seller or anything- I figure if nothing else, a harpsichord could keep someone warm for a bit on a cold winter's night if they had a fireplace... I may just drag it over to the college, they already have a decent one but now they could play duets. It's strange, yet amazing what some people have lying around, and what they'll take for it.

Those things are an absolute nightmare to keep in tune! But it would certainly be a lovely accompaniment to your piccolo rep.

No, it's John Kerry, errrrr, I mean: Lurch! My C-note harpsichord is nowhere near this ornate. That would be sweet.

That is fantastic. I'd love to see pictures and maybe a video when you get it set up. I've only sat at a harpsichord keyboard once, but it was fun for the time I spent with it.

Well, I have about 3 keys that don't produce a sound and I wouldn't be able to identify the tonal center as 440 or the temperament, but everything appears to be here. I think I can fix most of it myself. There are also a couple broken wooden bracing parts inside but nbd to duplicate. I'll know more in a few days. Not much different than screwing around with an old VW bug, which is what I'm really looking for. When I had to drive them as a kid, I hated them. Had to be going as fast as it'd go downhill during winter to get heat, then you burned your left foot and ankle while the rest of you froze. I also don't ever remember doing anything but flooring the pedal every time I started out, clutch point to clutch point. But they were easy and fun to tinker with and if I didn't have to rely on it I'd have some fun today. (The harpsichord might be faster than a '65 bug, block to block, though.)

It was a Rolls Canardli. Rolls down one hill, can hardly make it up the next. Also: fill it up with oil - and check the gas!

Not sure a harpsichord could keep pace with it though. (You did ring, didn't you?)

Performed by the same actor that performed Lurch. (A little bit of trivia for you today.)

Ed Kottick, one of our trombone players, designs and builds harpsichords in Iowa City. He gave the band a tour of his house, and things were so impressive that I didn't even make any jokes.

Maybe I should haul this thing over to IA City and have him mess with it. Be a good op to visit my sister. I've set it up and it'll need some major adjustments. And the one I bought is more bulky looking and more wide than the pic and the ones we have at the college. It's starting to snow here, maybe I'll just start using it for firewood
