wow this horn is starting to grow on me. not heavy and clunky like the 70's ambassadors. very schweet! i think 1960 was a sweet spot for olds manufacturing before they got taken over. a student in 1960 was getting a great horn from olds. |

I agree 100%!
it should have the water keys with the little teardrop
bulby ends. between the cool straight round stock and the
utilitarian flat paddle type
mine all play better with broken braces too!!

Mine is a lightweight(thinner materials during and immediatly after WWII) low number 1947 job played average i guess, then I swapped in a Bach #43 leadpipe( the old one had bumps and othe issues)
WoW, this is like a different horn altogether, made it into a wonderfull player.

Played one yesterday that was in need of TLC, maybe a valve alignment, but sounded and played great. Big sound. _________________ Sima, Kanstul 1525 Flugel and Kanstul pocket trumpet. Olds Super |

Several years ago, I sold an older Olds Ambassador to another TH'er. I think it had no finish and had been buffed down a little. He took it to band and passed it around the section as a Pre-War Besson. Everyone raved about it until finally one player noticed the faint Ambassador engraving on the bell... |

Payed next to nothing for this silver plate model,Original case... just needed a leadpipe, Opted for a Bach #43, as it's a popular update, and easy to get ... weight is about 4 oz less than the 1950's editions(901grs/31.78oz), plays real sweet , great above the staff too.
Thinking of an Olds Recording/Bach strad. style 3rd valve sllide trigger, just for the ease of it!!

I'm Getting My 1954 Old's modded next week I already enjoy a lot of aspects about it. I had the rear valve cluster brace removed and that opened up the sound a bit and made the horn play more flexibly. I'm getting a 43pipe and some new bracing put on it. I'm excited to see the changes. Great old horns |

+1 for the Ambassador. I have a mid-60's one I bought for about $100 from someone on TH. I cleaned it, stripped the lacquer off, and then followed Ron's advice about loosening the braces on the valve block. Result - awesome slotting horn that I've used on gigs (broadway shows) that does just about everything I want it to. Just want to try it on a jazz gig, which I haven't yet. Was going to do a leadpipe upgrade due to the stuffiness factor but couldn't bring myself to spend the money and Kanstul even said if it's not red rotted, why spend the $$? Oh, and I JB welded the front brace that was removed, but put it a little further back on the horn than it's original position.
Pretty amazing for a $100 horn!!! _________________ Adams A1 Tpt.
