Charlie Parker said to Clifford, "I don't believe it. I hear what you are saying, but I don't believe it." The greatness of Clifford Brown is monumental. Clifford by all accounts was not only a great musician on the highest level, but also a great human being that inspired so many people including some of the greatest musicians of all time. Sonny Rollins said, "Clifford was a profound influence on my personal life. He showed me that it was possible to live a good, clean life and still be a good jazz musician". Some friends and myself once talked with Art Blakey about Clifford and he said, "Clifford was an angel". Art really believed that.

Clifford The Big Red Dog is amazing. How does he not *eat* those kids? Do you think a cat that size could resist?

Scary PBS shows.

Clifford Brown is one of my favorite musicians, if not my favorite. There will never be anyone like him...I'm going to listen to Study In Brown now!

Great composer as well - Daahoud and Joy Spring are extraordinarily fun to play!

I had never heard of an intersection of Charlie Parker and Clifford, two great technical masters.

Did they ever play together? Not that I know of. I'd sure like to hear any recording that may exist.

I think Bird is the one who told Art Blakey about Clifford, but I could be mistaken.

--------------

Okay, I just went and looked it up:

http://cliffordbrown.jazzgiants.net/biography/

In May of 1952, Brown has the opportunity to sit in with Charlie Parker for a week. “Bird helped my morale a great deal,” Brown remembered. “One night he took me in a corner and said, “I don’t believe it. I hear what you’re saying, but I don’t believe it.” Impressed by Brown’s playing, Parker later told drummer Art Blakey that he wouldn’t need a trumpet player before heading to Philadelphia, saying, “You won’t need one after you hear Clifford Brown.”

Goodness......Arturos Joy Spring on Trumpet Evolution is insane. Harder to name the differences at first, but you can hear a hint of Arturo during the solo.

Clifford Brown's wife stated she has live recordings of him and Bird that are better than the Beehive.

No Clifford and Bird that's been released, but I'd love to hear those live recordings that Larue Brown has! Here's the closet we can get, Fats (one of the biggest influences on Brownie) and Bird live at Birdland:
