Obviously a lot of personal bias comes into play here...but any suggestions for the brand of straight mute to use for this show?
I've just started some practicing in the book and have a TC brass bottom mute. Just doesn't seem like it'll be one that I prefer. |

I'd played this show a number of times and feel the straight mute should be very buzzy. I most recently used an aluminum/copper Denis Wick; it has a nice bite. If you have access to a Balu mute, it would be good for the softer mute passages...

I also agree with the choice of a Denis Wick straight mute. Very responsive mute, and cuts through the sound of the orchestra. |

Now that I think about it, whenever I do this show again I'll likely use a Trumcor Lyric mute for at least part of the show. It worked really well on Seussical recently. |

I did end up using the Wick. Seemed to be a good fit for the conditions. |

I used an aluminum Tom Crown Gemini for most parts including all of the fanfares, and a Trumcor Lyric mute for the real quiet cues. _________________ Justin J. Smith |

Denis Wick - quick response, good pitch and tone.
Jo-Ral - nearly the same, just a hint less buzz/sizzle especially at softer dynamics _________________ Freelance Performer/Educator
