Hi,
I just bought a Martin Committee Deluxe 1954 but I need to get it fixed.
- Receiver is cracked
- Leadpipe not straigt
- Tuning slide Broken
- Dents...
My Question: Who would be your first choice to do the work?
(Melk, Landress, Dr.Valve...)
Thx

Any of the guys on your list do fine work at a very reasonable price. I've had very high quality repair done by both Dr. Valve and Charlie Melk. It's all pretty straight forward repair. I'd probably base my decision between the two on how busy their current schedules are and how quickly they could get to it.

Robb Stewart is the best, in my opinion and in the opinion of many others.
Last time I talked to Robb, he mentioned having some original Committee tuning slide parts on hand. He may have other parts, as well. I certainly would give him a call.

I think all of the repairmen listed are really good.
I went to Josh Landress for refurbishing my LB Martin Committee and it turned out incredible. Josh is very nice, friendly and honest and his prices are reasonable. I will be sending my other Martin project to him in the next few days. _________________ Several Trumpets and Flugelhorns!

OP:
Please correct your title (before some woodwind, or worse yet, string player sees it and starts making brass Neanderthal jokes). Unless that is, your intentions are to turn that horn into a restaurant.
Restoration. |

Doesn't restauration in French mean restoration? The guy is from Montreal. |

Clarification
The "auto-correct" on my iphone changed the word.
The word "restoration" does not exist in french.
The right spelling (in french) is restauration.
Sorry for the confusion...
Thanks for taking the time to share info and ideas with me.

Too many reports of their restorations having lower quality.
If you don't call Charlie Melk, you're doing yourself a disservice.

I second that. Charlie has restored over 25 horns for me, and the results are never less than amazing. He is a master. He is also honest and reliable. He has a range of custom leadpipes for older pro trumpets that can improve their playing characteristics while preserving their essential character.
Robb Stewart is also terrific (he built a couple of wonderful custom brass instruments for me to his own designs), but judging from his website, his restoration focus seems to be very early and/or historically significant brass instruments (Civil War-era horns, for example, or instruments played by well-known symphony or studio artists). However, it certainly wouldn't do any harm to reach out to him and see if he would be interested in restoring a 50's Committee. (Regarding underlined verbiage, I was mistaken about Robb's "restoration focus" -- see scottfsmith's post and my reply below.)

All three of those guys are fantastic. No worries with any of them. Sounds like you need a full replacement leadpipe/tuning slide. _________________ Justin J. Smith |

Just head to https://www.robbstewart.com and click on his email.
Robb does all kinds of work not just earlier stuff, at some point he told me the majority of his time is repairs on post-WWII horns - thats what pays his bills. _________________ Thane Standard Large Bb / Monette Unity B6-7M mpc

You are correct, Scott. My earlier post drew a false conclusion based on the horns and articles that Robb features on his website. At any rate, he would be a great choice. |
