Several horns come to mind... from years ago... BUT.....
I bought a mid 1970's Getzen 300 that played as well as any of my "pro" horns for about $100.00....and I still have it.
The Getzen 300 series HAS to be one of the most underrated horns out there. Even the later vintages with some trim changes are excellent choices. _________________ MARK /aka "musicmork"/ aka " The Creator "

I've bought a few Bach Strads for under a $1000 over the years. In fact I bought a Bach 72 in raw brass for $800 about 4 years ago. Sold it to a local friend for the same price who is still playing it. I've said before, if you're patient you can find inexpensive Bach Strads. Even when Bachs are beaten up they still have good bones. If it’s brass it can be repaired. |

I have always liked the Bach TC300 cornet. 1st slide saddle is a good feature and the horn plays wonderfully. Good sound and intonation aspects are good as well. Much better beginning horn than most student models of various brands I have ever come across.
I am not a Yamaha fan generally but there are some older 2331 series trumpets that play extremely well even though they are student models.

Just received (last night) my Mauriat 655. Last
Bought it on ebay.
First impression: I am impressed...
I will use this one for my rehearsals this week.
En résumé, inexpensive + very good/open high register...

I have a DEG signature 2000 somewhere. I paid 300 quid for it and carried it home in a styrofoam case. It had an amazing blow. The valve block fell apart sadly. Non brassy sound. _________________ Bach 180/37

I totally agree. I discovered them in a high school inventory while play testing them for needed repairs. These horns were well over 30 years old. The horns were worn with almost all the lacquer gone, but they had such a nice response. |

Hi
Interesting thread. If I was talking about trumpets that have a cheap list price that play well then the CarolBrass 5000 series are really hard to beat. They play at a level I'd be very happy using to make my living with and exceptional value at under £500 delivered from Thomann.
As to hooters I've picked up used that were excellent value and great players a B&S Challenger 2 picc in silver that was brand new for £199 from Cash Convertors is excellent and a low mileage as new Boosey and Hawkes Sovereign Studio trumpet bought for £100 is a brilliant commercial hooter.
All the best

I plan to get one of these new once I've made the money busking. That's my rule: I have to make the money busking with my Yamaha student horn. _________________ Yamaha 8335LA with Blessing 3C, 5C, Schilke 11A4A |

I was looking at one of those, used, at a music store yesterday. They wanted $600-odd for it, it *looked* used, and the first valve slide was stuck solid. Err, no thanks. _________________ Yamaha 8335LA with Blessing 3C, 5C, Schilke 11A4A |

Good choice.
I'd buy a used 4335 for maybe $100 more than a used 2330/2335 but not more than that. One with first valve issues? Pass. Might need valve oil, might be just problematic overall. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

I bought a Yamaha YFH-233 student flugelhorn off a TH member from the marketplace here. I paid $4-500, something like that.
It's in raw brass scratch finish, and clearly has been under the blowtorch many times. The third slide has been reversed and a ring added, and a thumb hook added on the first valve. The valves have been rebuilt. Some money went into this thing at some point. The valves were so new I had to break them in myself.
Anyway, it is the absolute sweetest-playing flugel I've ever held. I've played $4K flugels that aren't even close. With my Curry 3.-FLD-Y mouthpiece, the thing just plain sings. I've had many offers to buy it from me.
An incredible value. _________________ Yamaha 8310Z trumpet

My first trumpet was a Getzen 300 that I got off of Ebay for $100, albeit used, about 6 years ago. I still have it and its a great horn. The valves are excellent, top notch infact. For the price, I am still blown away. _________________ Kanstul 1601

Pretty darn happy with my cr310! By far the best finish of all my horns and I love the way it plays. _________________ a few different ones |

[quote="giakara"]All the Getzen Capri line trumpet, cornet, flugel and the discontinued piccolo are horns that you can get very cheap used and you can use them in a professional gig.

agreed; Just bought a Capri flugel (I still have a Benge 5 bell) after I purchased a Capri cornet ... LOVE the valves on both, and with each a different mouthpiece really makes a difference on the sound. That's a good thing. |

Got to agree with Dennis 78 here. IMHO the Bach CR310 cornet is the best playing instrument for the money out there. The one I owned vibrated in my hands while playing, had a nice sound and was pretty much as nimble as my Strad. Really a hidden treasure.

I still have my 2320 from beginning band in 1995 and feel the same way. The only knock I ever had on the Yamaha beginner trumpets was how stiff the third slide was. _________________ --Matt--
