Howdy, folks. I'll admit it: my Rhythm Changes solos kind of stink. I've made one of my 2017 playing goals to really get my Rhythm Changes solos where they need to be. I understand the changes, of course, it's just that my solos are considerably less hip than they should be.

Of course, the best way to get facility with the language is to transcribe some solos.

I'd like your advice on some "classic" trumpet Rhythm Changes solos that you think would be useful to transcribe. I'm looking for solos with tons of actually useful vocabulary, but aren't so far "out" or technically difficult that it'll take a million years to transcribe or be impossible to play. Just stuff to get the changes better in my ear and some solid entry-level vocabulary that I can use as a base to develop my own ideas from.

I appreciate your recommendations!

Listen to Miles Oleo from '58 Miles, Jazz at the Plaza and the like. Check out Chet Baker. Their language is pure music with lush beautiful sounds. Clark Terry was the master of I got rhythm changes. That is the way to play. Always keep it simple less is more. Let your sound tell the story always lead your improvisations with your beautiful sound. Your quality of sound is what draws the listener in and makes him want to stay and listen to you. Tell your story from a standpoint of wisdom about life always being honest about what you have experienced, don't be afraid to get deep with it. Tell your story as Clark Terry did and play with dynamics. Also remember what Clark Terry said. "Don't try to be too hip because 2 hips make an ass". Think music, music, music.

Lee Morgan on the Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers "At The Jazz Corner of the World" album. They use it for their set closers, but they also do a full-length slower version of "The Theme" and Lee absolutely lays it all out. Hank Mobley also plays a magnificent solo on it as well.

That album is some of my all-time favorite Lee Morgan.

If you want some more modern Rhythm changes, John Swana and Friends (with Tom Harrell) has tons of red-meat-Rhythm-changes-trumpet-solos. Killer!

Yes, that Lee Morgan is exactly what I'm looking for. Great solo! What an awesome album, I love playing "Chicken 'n Dumplings!" I appreciate the pointer, thanks!

I remember this thread:

I love KD's playing on The Theme recorded on "Live at Cafe Bohemia 1955 Vol.1" by Art Blakey.

Hi turtle.
The rhythm changes "changes" are often not respected i find. By this i mean that i hear so many ametuer players just jamming away on the I chord (and u can get away with it). It sounds so great when a soloist spells out the changes though, especially the V7/II (2bd chord in bar I ). Get a feel for the b9 on that chord and the V7 too. I lifted an excellent dexter gordon chs years back thats one of the cleanest I've come across i reckon. Will try and look it up tomorrow.

Ok, the album is Dexter Gordon "Go", tune is Second Balcony Jump.
Great solo, and easy to lift (prob available on line by now).

Here's the lick I've taken and use it "as my own" . (From his second chs of solos.). I quickly wrote it out, so the last bar or so isn't as he did it, but spell's our how I like the b9 on the Dom 7 chords.
