Book came yesterday, and after reading the first few pages about Mr Adam, i really wish i could have studied with him. I found it interesting about his other skills, I mean buidling his own homes, woodworking skills, iron mongery, just incredible. I feel we would have had alot in common as i do lots of those things also. I also have read some of his recommended reading that is listed, being a golfer i read "the little red book, by harvey penick, and i read "inner game of golf" by galway which is the golf version of "inner tennis", "golf in the kingdom", now that was a book that took me time to get into, but after a few chapters i couldn't put it down.
The "routine" is discussed breifly and different time period examples are shown, as well as variations from some of his students including jerry hey and larry hall. It's funny i have put together my own Bill Adam binder, with "my" routine and i have alot of the stuff thats in the book, but there are quite a few things i don't have. It's really nicely printed and is great to have all this stuff together and neatly organized. It's a must have for any Bill Adam Fan. Thank you Charley Davis!!.

So whats the deal with the Jerry Hey and Larry Hall variations of some of the routine stuff. some of them are crazy fingerwise and to me anyway they sound strange. Does anybody know what their thought process was behind them?
just wondering, really, I love the book though and the way its presented, I use it everyday.

After you do 4-8 hours of routine every day for a bunch of years you start wanting to vary things. The variations take the traditional exercises and adapt them to other harmonic sounds we find in modern music. I recently sent Charley a bunch of other variations that Botti and I used to do when we were studying with Adam. I think those might be incorporated in a later edition of the book. _________________ Bach trumpet artist-clinician

That's what i was thinking too, i would just love to see anything new that you lucky people who studied with Mr Adam would make available. My version of his routine has made such a huge difference in my playing and understanding of how to get it to work consistently, even though i am far from anything like 4 hours of practice a day.
Thanks for Replying Mr Harbison !! BTW, your technical studies for the modern trumpet player, Is that following along in the Mr Adam approach, i've been thinking about getting it.

I got this book but I don't see how it is a routine. It has 20 numbered exercises and then various exercises from Arban, Clark and I think Schlossberg but there doesn't seem to be a routine to follow. Can someone explain how I would use this book as a daily routine? _________________ Adams/ACB collaborative

You really need a teacher to show you HOW to do it. However, basically the WHAT of the "routine" would be to you play the 20 numbered exercises every day and then spend a few hours with other selected things in the book plus some literature and repertoire. That's the "Adam routine." _________________ Bach trumpet artist-clinician

Thanks PH. I'll have to work up to doing those 20 exercises daily. Maybe break it up into a morning session and 2 evening sessions. _________________ Adams/ACB collaborative

With adequate rests and without doing all of the variations and extensions into the highest register, it takes me between 90 minutes and 2 hours to get through that basic routine. Then I'm really ready to start practicing or I'm set up very well for the rest of my playing day. _________________ Bach trumpet artist-clinician

HI PH,
I bought a copy of Charlie's tribute to Bill Adam, I love the organization of the Schlossberg, Clark and various other exercises. I studies with the late Phillip Reucktenwald in college and didn't realize how similar his teachings were to Adam. I have been covering the material in the book ( takes me about 2hs and 45) to complete, resting as long as I play between exercises and it has revived my embouchure. Great collection of exercises that DO WORK if approached with the right mindset. _________________ Juan "Leo" Leonardo |
