My all-time favorite bass players are James Jamerson and Carol Kaye - most of us have heard more of what they've played than what Victor Wooten has played. They also both had impeccable time and groove.

The Seiko metronome arrived today. I used it for a two hour session of scale practice. It is exactly what I wanted.

It is loud enough. It has a choice of two different sounds, a low and a high pitch tic that sounds very much like an old fashioned wind up metronome. It has a flasher that works very well.

If I were looking for something negative to say, it would be that the numbers on the dial are very tiny. If you are a young fellow, I'm sure that they would be no problem. I am not a young fellow.

Regards,
Grits

I see you've already purchased one. Just one comment about mechanical metronomes. My parents bought a Seth Thomas (iirc) one with the graduated bar and adjustable weight years ago. It *never* beat an even rhythm.

I don't know if the internal gizmos were out of whack from the factory or what, but it would beat one side of each left/right motion at a slightly different speed than the other, regardless of tempo setting. So it would click about 55% on one side, 45% on the other. Not quite even useful for jazz licks.

It still sits atop the piano in my parent's house, but has almost never been used for anything but a decoration.

RandyTX,

Yep. That's the same problem I am having with the Seth Thomas that I purchased. If you tilt it exactly right, you can get it to beat fairly accurately.

However, even when it beats steadily, I never really had confidence that the rate of the beats was anywhere near what the setting suggested. Did it really beat 90 beats per minute if you adjusted it to do so? I have my doubts.

The new Seiko I purchased is simply a better device. It works as it is supposed to.

Regards,
Grits
