Hey All,

Part of my next push in practicing is increasing my listening to top level trumpeters in the orchestral field, so I can work on better developing the "sound target" in my head. Ideally, I could stand in the same room as the greats and just have them play music 5 feet away from me all day long, but I don't think that's going to happen.

That said, I'm looking for solo recordings of these folks, with the preference being completely unaccompanied. I have the Phil Smith excerpt album and the Tom Hooten Arban Characteristic Study album, and these are great for what I'm looking for. It's really nice having all the other sounds and instruments removed and getting to just hear their pure trumpet tone.

I'll still probably get their accompanied albums, but does anyone have any recommendations of any other unaccompanied albums/recordings of modern top orchestral trumpeters? Does anyone know if the CD that comes with Phil Smith's Concert Studies Etude books is accompanied or unaccompanied?

Thanks!

Tom Hooten has a solo album out, but with piano. The Phil Smith collection has all the concerti he ever performed with NYP live, and they are great. That would be my suggestion

I've actually heard a bit of the Hooten solo album, which is very nice - love the Honegger. I'll probably end up purchasing that one too.

Is the Phil Smith you're referring to the one with 3 albums, one of orchestra highlights and 2 of concerti?

Yep. The concerto albums are great, and a fantastic reference.

Thanks, Craig. I presume you are referring to Phil Smith's "Orchestral Excerpts for Trumpet". I actually just picked that one up this morning in addition to the Hooten Arban album. Smith's sounds great for style and articulation. Seems like you do lose a tiny bit of the raw trumpet sound because it sounds like he's in a bigger room with lots of reverb, but I can already tell I'll play that album to death.
