My straight mute makes my trumpet play flat. Should I-

a. Sand the corks to make them thinner, or,

b. Put on thicker corks.

All mutes alter intonation.

There are instructions on how to adjust mute corks here:

http://mutemeister.com/Corks.html

If you follow them and get the low F# to lock in nicely and the mute still makes the horn play flat, then you'll need to adjust your tuning slide to bring it in tune.

There can be other issues, such as the mute is not tightly put together. What brand of mute is it?

Playing flat means the effective length is too long so to shorten it you normally file down the corks.

I also have a Facet straight mute that is flat. I've filed the corks and it is still usually flat. I don't use it much as it doesn't blend that well where I play and it is not in tune.
