If I were buying a cornet for jazz I would be looking for an Olds Super / Super Recording
What is it about the Olds Super / Super Recording that you like? Does it have a bright sound? Is it easy in the upper register? Can you color the sound? Can you bend the notes easily?
Thanks,

Great demo, Jon. That's one of the things I'm always looking for is a demo of what the horn can do in various styles. It sounds much like my York. Interesting that it is a ML bore, it sounds bigger than that. For the trad. or dixie sound, I would like a little sweeter sound than it gets. I wish there were a modern small bore cornet out there. _________________ Richard

Me too. Small bore trumpets too, like the 1907 Besson. Brad Goode wrote a blog post about small bore trumpets and the lost art of trumpet design. He thinks they're much easier to play, and yet they can provide a huge sound when you want that. _________________ Bb Yamaha Xeno 8335IIS

Thanks for the link to that article. I've never seen it before. I so totally agree. _________________ Richard
The sound is my sound... always remember; source material will only be amplified by the AX. I was playing a mouthpiece no cornetist would play. My blasphemous gear would cause a riot amongst the righteous. In other words with your gear I have no doubt that you could get the sweet sound you are looking for. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/user/Rufftips

Good point, Jon. Right now I'm playing a Conn 80A cornet with a Yamaha 11E mouthpiece. I'm close to the sound I want but not there. The glorious quest goes on. _________________ Richard

I have a Los Angeles Olds Recording cornet and it is the easiest cornet for bending and scooping notes I have ever played. It's such a wonderful instrument . . . I had one years ago that I sold (like a big dummy) but now I have another one. This one is from 1952 or 1953, in excellent playing condition thanks in large part to Michael Del Quadro's expertise.
One day I hope to be able to sound half as good on it as Mike Sailors on his Puje!

Has anyone tried to make it work with an Olds Ambassador cornet?
How did that work for you?
Olu Dara did OK with such.
The Olds block sure beats the student level Conn, as does the overall responsiveness. Gotta follow basics and get the valves all the way down with the A-5. The Recording cornet has more forgiveness there for 'art'.
Ambassadors aren't outwardly clunky, though, more like sure-foooted. Good with mutes. _________________ kochaavim, csillaagkep, αστερρισμός, konnstelacji, connstellation... ...a.k.a. the 28A!
