We had such a good response from when the http://jazzdaddy.com writer, Justin Scoville, did a guest post that he wrote a part 2 to his last post. Check it out at http://jasonklobnak.com/2014/07/21/how-to-practice-licks-that-dont-sound-like-licks-part-2/

Enjoy!

My first book, Targeting: Improvisation With Purpose turns 5 years old! This has been one of the most popular products at JKM and has been helping musicians of all levels on their improvisation journey. It's been used by beginners, colleges/universities, and professionals. You can check out some of the book by going through my free blog tips at my website on this thread. Below are also two of the earliest of many reviews:

“I’ve been using the book for a while and I’m starting to see some great results on the new licks I am adding to my library-targeting works!”

Jim Manley
Trumpet Artist-St. Louis, MO

“Targeting has really zeroed in on some very essential aspects of improvisation for the jazz and commercial player. Perfect for those new to the art or advancing players – check it out!”

Al Hood
Associate Professor of Trumpet
Lamont School of Music
Jazz and Solo Artist

It's been a while since my last improv tip post and thought it is about time I get some more out (although, it may not be weekly like before).

This post is on Why Your Improvisation Never Works Out the Way You Plan

Would you like something to help out your improvisation over polyrhythms and other metric modulations? Check out my review of this new app called Genius Jamtracks!

I was going to write this post last week, but after my trip to NAMM I had a lot to catch up on! This tip is another that would be great for any level of improvisor, but especially a beginner or intermediate student:

Over the last week I've had a few people ask me, "where's a good place to start beginners on improvisation?" Here's my take:

I'm going back into the blog vault because a student asked this past week what other pentatonics I like using as a targeting device.

Dominant Pentatonic

I was revisiting some standards over the weekend and was playing through Nica's Dream. It reminded me of a previous post I made about analyzing lines...

Thanks for covering this topic. I'm not sure if I'm a trumpet player with 40 years of experience, or 1 year of experience 40 times! Helpful.

I talk about this concept with my students and realized I haven't covered it yet on my blog. This week's post is on Harmonic Targeting.

For the student who needs help with rhythm and FEEL, try Rhythmic Solfege.
