A big thing is to don't over do it and hurt yourself. When I practice range extension I typically rest as much as I play.

I think the idea is to develop elasticity in the lips. I was taught to use the James Stamp warm ups, and I do them at the beginning of every practice. I also find that when my chops start to get tight I use them to loosen up before taking a break.
