Standard rule of thumb would be to seek to use less tension where it is not needed. Think also about blowing "warm, moist" wind where ever possible. |

Long tones. Start each one very soft, crescendo to a big, full sound (but not harsh) then back down to very soft. Try to keep the pitch and sound steady without wavering.

In order of importance:
1. A vivid tonal imagination: you can't produce something that you can't conceive. Can you sit quietly away from the horn and hear your desired sound vividly and loudly in your mind's ear? Listen to great instrumentalists and singers, sing everything, and spend time cultivating your inner Gabriel.
2. Regular self-recording to calibrate your ears to what's actually coming out of the bell.
3. Free and uninhibited use of air - resonant inhalation, immediate turnaround (no pause!), and a warm exhalation.
4. Playing in the most resonant part of each note - crescendoing through lip bends while listening for the note to jump out of the horn is a great way to learn this. Don't concern yourself with playing higher or lower on the pitch (or even the center), just chase that vibrant sound. |
