I've noticed I've been punching certain notes, like G and C. Why am I pinching and what can I do to stop?

hello,
impossible to give you a good advice here....
aperture control, mouthpiece, breathing, stress etc, etc.

the better one i could give you, especially since you live in California, is to have a lesson with Bobby Shew that lives in New Mexico.
you'll not regret it, never in your life

best

This is one of those "talk to a teacher" or "get a lesson" threads. There could be any number of issues, most of which you're likely unaware of. Find a good teacher (a pro) and get a lesson. Or several.

Agreed, and as I tell students, it doesn't matter what is done during lessons if the student does not go PRACTICE the material. I have students (and their parents) who want to think that just showing up for thirty minutes once a week is enough to fix their problems....even though I make it clear that's not the case. Sort of like the person who has a health club membership and seldom uses it; makes them feel better because they have a membership card in their wallet.

Breathing Gym is a good place to start. Try some balloons and pinwheels.

I second everybody on here. Get a lesson, Bobby Shew amazing! But there are a lot of great players in California.

I try and relax when I pinch. Relax the chops, throat and relieve tension in the lips.

What's helps me is trying to keep my jaw more open while playing helps keep my throat open, and forcing a more relaxed feeling in my lips. Even in the higher registers....actually, especially in the higher registers
