On the heels of attending a performance by Tine Thing Helseth and tenThing I went back and listened to a recording I have of Harry Kvebæk. One of the best recordings of the Hindemith that I've heard. Kvebæk was the former principal trumpet in the Oslo Philharmonic and the teacher of Arnulf Naur Nilsen, who in turn was Helseth's teacher.

Dear Veum,

As I am a Norwegian trumpeter myself, I find extremely interest in your post.
First of all - I agree totally that Mr. Kvebæk version of Hindemith Sonata is a fantastic version - he also did a great version (at that time) of the Divertimento by Øystein Sommerfelt.

I had Mr. Kvebæk as my private trumpet teacher for years (from 12 years old to around 20 years old), and because I lived just 15 minutes from him, I had the opportunity to have quite many lessons with Mr. Kvebæk.

I bought his CD with the Hindemith on it based on the comments here. It arrives tomorrow. Looking forward to it. It has Sommerfeldt piece on it, but it's the Elegy and not the Divertimento

I remember when Bud Herseth was in Norway in 1977.

Harry Kvebæk played a Swedish tune called Faebodpsalm in the church in Elverum. Bud Herseth had tears in his eyes. It was so beautiful.

Btw, Harry was also Ole Edvard Antonsens teacher.

I remember hearing Mr. Herseth play the Faebodpsalm in a recital at his church in Oak Park, Illinois back in the mid-80s. As I was studying with him then, I managed to get a copy from him at the time, but now having just looked for it, can't find it in my files! I do remember it's beautiful and almost mournful character. Thanks for reminding me of that piece. I'll keep looking!

Larry,

The tune was originally written for organ by Oskar Lindberg.
You should find it on the Internet, quite easily.

Btw, here is a version with Alison Balsom:

Ole Edvard Antonsen did also record this tune:

Ole Edvard has in my opinion the same soulful or singing playing as his teacher Harry Kvebæk.

Thanks so much for these links, Ole. Here is the correct link for Ole Edvard Antonsen's version:

I'll have a look-see today to find the music. Reminding me of the composer was a huge help. Thanks again!

Wishful thinking..... the CD came yesterday and it's NOT the one with Hindemith.... it was Hovhaness, and others - and actually a CD I already had!!

Anyone have information on his CD with the Hindemith??

You have to buy the CD called Årringer. At that CD you will also find the recording of Hindemith Sonata.
