YBS of the late 90s and early 00s (but Peter Roberts is my soprano playing hero, so perhaps I am biased)
Currently, Cory. Simply outstanding and Philip Harper draws some lush sounds out of the band. Steve Stewart on soprano there is unreal, too. They're unstoppable at the minute. |

On a technical level, Cory are in a class of their own...
... But they just leave me cold a lot of the time - can be a bit sterile and the interpretation is sometimes a little off the wall (I didn't particularly enjoy their rendition of Pageantry for that reason).
With newer stuff, they're unbelievably good but often disappoint me with older pieces.
They fully deserve their success, but the sprinkling of magic that makes a true great just isn't there, for me. |

Was for a long time a fan of Grimethorpe (perhaps because my teacher once played with them and got me backstage when they came to OZ in the early 80s).
I think now it's probably Black Dyke. Favourite OZ band would be Brisbane Excelsior, followed by Preston (perhaps because I once played for them).
Cheers,
