Vacchiano plays El Salon Mexico on his Bach D trumpet. Copland is having so much fun conducting his music. What a great historical document!

I always preferred the way the lyrical 'mariachi' solo sits on a D trumpet - the 'lip trill' can be played alternating cleanly between open and '3' plus, with the orchestration at that moment, playing a somewhat smaller horn won't stand out quite as much as when playing over a big section. However, playing some of the big moments on D helps out with all of those high concert 'B's!
