That trailer doesn't really show much. I hope it's good, but it's hard to tell from that. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

It's showing at one theater in NYC now, at Lincoln Center.
The director did a very good documentary on Albert Ayler back in 2006. He seems good at making a story of a jazz life come alive, even with very little documentation. (Sometimes I'm amazed how little documentation is available, in general... for example, people knew John Coltrane was a musical giant, so how is it possible that many of his performances were unfilmed, unrecorded, or recorded so poorly?)
There's a good review of the film in the Village Voice. The reviewer makes the good point that films get made about jazz musicians who lead romantic, tragic lives...but not stalwart geniuses like Wayne Shorter or Billy Harper.

An exception to this rule would, I think, be the recent Clark Terry documentary. Perhaps also the recent Miles Davis movie. _________________ Jeff Helgesen

I went to see the Lee Morgan film yesterday. I highly recommend it. It was really interesting how the director managed to make a captivating motion picture out of mostly audio and still shots.
There was some great rare photos shown, as well as some very unique video clips that I have never seen before.
I highly recommend the picture. _________________ -Chris |

I saw it over the weekend, and it very good. I wish they had shown more footage of him teaching at a jazz workshop in 1971. I just can't imagine being a high school student, and having Lee Morgan as your teacher! There was also some interview footage from 1971 in his apartment I've never seen, and I wish they would have shown more of that as well. Still, it was very well done, and it showed a sympathetic light towards his wife.
Very intelligent guy, and his brilliance as a musician can't be overstated. Kudos for making such a great film about him! _________________ Brent |
