So I've started thinking about grad schools, and I was wondering if anyone could suggest schools and teachers to focus on lead trumpet playing. Also, if anyone knows of how auditions would work, since most schools only list classical or jazz, and advice or input would be great. Thanks!

Being in a great program for grad school with a great professor is great. But there is only so much that can be gained by playing in big band in school and learning from one guy.

If you could get yourself in an environment where there is a lot of playing outside of class to listen to or participate in you'd benefit lightyears further.

In NYC you'd have a couple choices I'd consider: Juilliard and study with Chris Jaudes. If you can get a scholarship, great, otherwise I hope you have some bucks, because tuition is insane. Your next option I'd consider is just north in Westchester (about 40 minute train ride from midtown NYC) and look at SUNY Purchase College, a State school, much less bread, and study with Jon Faddis.

And being in/near NYC thee are so many of the greatest trumpeters playing every night in town at jazz clubs with big bands, and Broadway shows, and building relationships studying with those guys leads to future work opportunities.

Just think of being able to take a lesson from Ryan Kysor, Frank Greene, Greg Gisbert, Nick Marcione, Dave Trigg, and countless others. And being able to go hear those guys playing every night in town.

You can look and do well at UNT, UNLV, Miami, Berkeley etc, but NYC is the scene. Learning and studying under Jon Faddis at a State school ....I can't think of a better lead trumpeter to study with.

Scott Belck at University of Cincinnati, CCM
Greg Wing at Morehead State University
Rob Parton at Capitol University
Joey Tartell at Indiana University

There are plenty of wonderful options out there!

While it's great to study with the best, if possible do not only that, but pick a place where you not only get a lot of good experience playing lead but get a situation where you can also play section with great lead players, learning from them. You can learn a lot playing with people better than you, too.
