Well I got my Curry 8.5B today. I tried a few scales with it and it sounded great. It's rim is a little more rounded than my old Bach 10.5C but comfort-wise I'd say they are similar. I have band rehearsals tonight so I am not going to play with it now. I don't want to mess up my chops. Tomorrow morning I'll use it during my practice session and see how it goes. For me it usually takes 3 or 4 days, sometimes less, to adjust to a different rim. But the deeper B cup sounds great so it will be worth the effort.

Its rim is rounded because it is a B cup rim. I like the sound of the B cup but I don't like the rim. I play the BC because of that. Have fun with the new mouthpiece. Please give us an update after a week or so.

Huh?

I thought Curry kept the same rim across all cups with the same rim designation...

Maybe the B cups having significantly more chop-space at the top of the cup than the BC cups means you perceive the rims different?

Or does the rim actually change with the cup on the 8.5 series?

Anyone have any experience with the Bach commercial model mouthpieces?

Yeah, will do.
I used it for a 90 minute workout this morning. My range isn't much better than an E above high C, but I make sure I play up to that several times during my daily practice sessions and I had no trouble getting there with the 8.5B. If things continue to go well I will get the C cup and the BC cup as well in the Curry 8.5 series.

Like GR and some others, Curry does not change the rim within the given diameter.
There really is a Bach 8 1/2 size in their catalogue. Whether Curry uses that style rim would be a question for him to answer.

There is a gradual reduction of undercut, or initial slope into the main, or first cup, from the deeper B cup

The rim diameters are consistent within each size. The rim shape changes depending on the letter. B cups are more rounded and the entrance to the cup has a higher alpha angle. I like a low alpha so I like the BC better as it has the standard Curry C rim. The BC has more chop space as you call it than the B due to the BC's steeper angle and entrance.

I think I'm a bit late to the conversation, but I just played a Patrick CR 10.5C and love it!

Here is what Steve Patrick states:

This mouthpiece is modeled after one of the first Bach New York 10 1/2 C's ever made. (It was made sometime in the late 1920's!) The hole size is a 27, and the back-bore is slightly brighter than the 1 1/2, 3, and 5. It is extremely comfortable and does not feel very small. It makes a wonderful all around mouthpiece and also a great piccolo or Eb trumpet mouthpiece. It also lends itself for those switching back and forth from a smaller commercial mouthpiece.

Band directors - I HIGHLY recommend starting your young players on this mouthpiece. Because of the size and shape, it will help them to get a good sound right away and to not develop any bad habits from straining on a mouthpiece that is too big.
