Hey Everyone,

I haven't heard about Paul in years. When I was going through my "high notes are the coolest thing ever" phase in high school back in the early 2000's, he was The Man. On a whim, I went over to his website, but it doesn't look like it's been updated in quite some time. Does anyone know what he's been up to over the last 5 years or so and what he's doing these days?

The last I heard he was living here in Las Vegas but none of the trumpet players have seen (or heard) him. A while back he did some work with Pia Zadora and I too have wondered about him.

Trumpet Artist Paul Cacia

Monday August 31st 2015, Paul Cacia was transported to the hospital in Las Vegas, by paramedics, where he was stabilized by emergency personnel and admitted for renal failure.

Diagnosis confirmed him as an insulin dependent Type II Diabetic with kidney failure, liver disease, chronic high blood pressure, tachycardia, and secondary kidney and gall bladder complications.

He has been stabilized and is responding to treatment.

Years ago I knew the girl (a trombone player) he was dating when he lived in Orange County but haven't heard anything since.

Where on the website did you find that info?

It's sad for me to see my teacher's early generation of students start to have age related health problems. I know Tony Horowitz has had to retire from playing due to health problems. And that news about Paul from a while ago now makes it sound like his playing days are at least numbered. Ugh.

By coincidence I've been listening to a lot of Paul's work as of late. I have most of his albums transferred from vinyl to CD, and purchased his "Legacy" CD recently. The guy was a very good player, obviously heavily influenced by Maynard. He had great technique on the horn in addition to his high chops. He sat down for a JPR interview a number of years ago where he discussed the fact that he wasn't built to be a full time lead player in a setting like Vegas, but preferred to to play the role of soloist and/or producer. The written interviews I've read suggest he has a healthy ego, but he is a trumpet player after all! I hope he's out of the woods in terms of his physical issues.

Since the first report Paul has had to return to the emergency room to be restabilized eight additional times. He has been further diagnosed as a "Brittle" diabetic, or severe diabetic, requiring constant testing and coresponding adjustments each day. He is recovering slowly from his other complications. Doctors have reported, in the coming months, as he learns to live with his condition, he should eventually feel better than he has in the last twenty years.

We wish to thank those who have sent emails of encouragement, it has been appreciated.

I heard back from Sheryl. I'm not exactly sure who she is but she said that Paul was appreciative for the email. As posted on the site, he is recovering slowly. Looking forward to having him back in the game.
