For me, the Ray Robinson has more of a nasal sound and more buzz than the Mute Meister cup mute. The Mute Meister mute is more velvety or pillowy. Both great mutes. |

I LOVE my Robinson cup mute. They're amazing. But also really rare, and expensive if you do happen to find a decent used one.
Ingram's mutes however, are cheaper than finding a nice Robinson, and infinitely more available. And I'd gamble that he wouldn't make a copy unless it would be of high-quality. If I didn't have my Robinson, I'd just buy one of his. _________________ PhD Candidate in Performance

Slight derailment of the thread:
Last week I subbed for a friend for one night of a musical. I only needed my Bb and mutes and grabbed a different case and packed my mutes. But accidentally grabbed a cup mute I haven't used in years.
My H&B mic-a-mute cup. What an awesome vintage sounding mute I've forgotten about forever.
You guys ever play one of these? I kinda like the sound so much I'm gonna use it for a while with my Robinson on jobs and see which I prefer, because I just can't make up my mind!! |

I just finished a week of the national tour of The Sound of Music. I bought two sets of mutes for my colleague and me to use on shows. Although we didn't get to use the "show" mute, the cups were fabulous. They have a great sound and play very well in tune. I did have to file the corks quite a bit and I have a 20th Anniversary Xeno, which has a large bell throat.
