Congratulations to Joshua Kauffman who won the US Army Blues audition yesterday!
Joshua is a graduating senior at the University of North Texas and is a four-year member of the One O'clock Lab Band, and is currently lead trumpet in the One O'clock.
He studied with John Holt and our fantastic Jazz Faculty - Mike Steinel, Rodney Booth, and Tanya Darby. _________________ Jason Bergman

Who's spot in the trumpet section does Joshua Kauffman replace? He is indeed in for a fun career. These military big bands are pretty much the last of the breed, given that the civilian bands are all gone. |

I just saw the Blues on Tuesday - it was their drummer MSG Steve Fidyk's final concert prior to his retirement. Man, what a show! It was one of the tightest big band performances I've ever heard, and Steve's drumming is just off the chain - I'm not sure I've ever seen a smoother, more consistent swing drummer. It's the kind of performance that I see, and I come away feeling so incredibly inadequate that I almost want to hang it up.
I wonder who they will hire to replace Steve at the kit - that's going to be tough. After doing some Google-fu about him, it seems that he's a giant in the world of jazz drumming. I feel VERY privileged to be able to call him an acquaintance.
Congrats to Joshua! He's stepping into a well-oiled machine!
On a side note, the guy currently playing the lead book is a guy by the name of Mark Wood. (he has I think 4 posts on this board.) Just screaming! He was stronger at the end of the concert than at the start. I spoke with him after the show and I'm going to try and hook up with him for some chops lessons.
Here's a vid of the Blues with Wayne Bergeron and Mark Wood trading solos.
