Stephen Ruppenthal's album Flamethrower, featuring compositions by Elainie Lillios, Allen Strange, Bruno Liberda, and Brian Belet, is a spectacular collection of highly creative new music for trumpet and electronics. The music runs from atmospheric to dramatic: full of beautiful and moody passages punctuated with bursts of outrageous energy. If Miles Davis had continued his avant-garde style into the age of 21st century computer music, he might have eventually made music like this (especially Allen Strange's "Misty Magic Land"). Elainie Lillios' "November Twilight" is my favorite, featuring a climatic section that surrealistically expands the sound of the trumpet several octaves in each direction. I really dig this album!
