|

My company has a new flagpole and will soon dedicate it. I was asked to play Taps (again). But I was thinking maybe "To the Colors" or the National Anthem would be correct! My sponsors aren't expert military protocol folks but they are ex-military. The ceremony will be outside around noon. Any guidance? Where should I ask? |

To the Colors is appropriate for a flag-raising. _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley |

And make sure they send that flag up quickly!

"Taps" is not suitable for flag-raising or flagpole dedication. Please don't.
"To The Color" is the bugle call usually used by the US military for flag-raising ceremonies. "The Star Spangled Banner" cannot normally be played on a bugle, unless it's the three-valve "bugle" used in modern drum and bugle corps. If you plan to use a trumpet, or a three-valve bugle, then "The Star Spangled Banner" is the tune to use.
If this is a non-military event, there is no need for military protocol, but I would suggest reviewing the Flag Code. Any military personnel present will know when to render salute if appropriate; leave that to them. _________________ '75 Bach Strad 180ML/37

My first thought was To the Colors as well.
And remember - flags being raised to fly at half-mast are raised to the top first and then lowered to half-mast. Similarly, before they are removed they are raised to the top, and the then lowered. _________________ Tom

Good reminder. Up is always snappy, and down is always slow. That applies during these half up and half down procedures as well.

Yep, "To The Colors", I can't see why anyone would suggest Taps, whether they have a military background or not.
As a nervous 8th grader, I was "drafted" into doing that every Monday, HATED it because I usually fracked more than one note.

LOL, same here. 8th and 9th grade, except daily, not weekly. Don't know if any of the students actually liked this, though. I, like you, hated playing this.
(FWIW, and I'm not sure it is, but a classmate of mine during that time was Bette Midler.) _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Wow, maybe you inspired Bette Midler to do her version of "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy"!😎

Thanks for your suggestions. Taps was originally suggested by the Veteran's group organizer since it is near Memorial day when the ceremony will be held. And he didn't know I could play other things! We decided on "To the Colors." (Yes, I am familiar with the Patton speech movie excerpt with the giant Flag, awesome. They showed us the Patton movie in high school back then!)
