Nice playing, but doesn't a good comparison of two horns require the same mouthpieces? |

Thanks for the demo. That bell looks huge--what is that, 5.25" maybe? _________________ Bb Yamaha Xeno 8335IIS

This is the same horn with 2 configurations. The VRII is a known entity with a reputation of being a commercial horn. I would argue that it is much more than that but shall not venture there now. The VRII is known to have excellent slotting, this slotting is not what some players are looking for. The VRII J~MOD is a different animal than the standard VRII. In the J~MOD configuration the slotting is broader with more room for the player to move around and it has the darkest tone quality of any VRII. When reconfigured as a normal VRII it can easily be played in a commercial setting. The copper bell is a darker bell but it can be pushed to create a nice color filled sound.
The point of the video was to show the 2 sides of this (the same) horn. It is a demonstration of the timbre range one player can produce. Using 2 or more mouthpieces is typical amongst commercial players so it was decided to present that scenario. It is not only about dark and bright is also about response and slotting. The main focus of the J~MOD is to offer a VRII that has broader slotting and a darker sound. The hardware swap back to the standard VRII configuration is a very nice option we felt was worth including. Because there are 2 complete sets of top and bottom caps plus it comes with a round and square tuning slide you can dial in the damping and resistance to achieve the timbre and blow you like. There are a lot of options that can be explored. We are anticipating jazz players will enjoy playing the horn in the J~MOD configuration. When a jazz player is on a R&B gig or in a commercial setting and long for a brighter sound, they can reconfigure the horn, drop in a commercial mouthpiece and get a much brighter sound. On the flip side of that we are also anticipating some commercial players that already play a commercial horn will enjoy playing this horn in the J~MOD configuration on solo jazz or pops (orchestra) gigs. Bijon Watson has already expressed interest in having one for that exact situation.
Playing the VRII J~MOD with the same mouthpiece in both configurations will produce some timbre change. It will not be as significant as what can be achieved by playing different mouthpieces in the 2 configurations. We were simply trying to present the concept that you can sound like 2 very different players on the same horn. We were also demonstrating the darker quality that the J~MOD VRII has to offer by contrasting it with the type of sound the VRII is normally know for. The character of the 2 configurations is noticeably different making it a fun horn to play and the 5.25” copper bell is a beautiful look.

Hmmm I thought there could be no more gear possibly invented for trumpet...I've been proved wrong again!!
I like the valve bells (?) and whatever's going on with those bottom caps!!
Crazy stuff!! The new horn and mods sound great. Hope it's a success. |
