Howdy, folks. This one is an odd request.

I play shows occasionally with a singer friend of mine. She gets a band together once in a while and plays a loud rock and roll show. Lots of covers, lots of booze in a hot dive bar. Tons of fun. There's always a loose "theme" of sorts to the night tying all the songs together.

I always choose a tune to act as a trumpet feature. Past selections have included "Miserlou" by Dick Dale and "Too Sad To Cry" by Imelda May. (I extended the trumpet solo on those considerably.)

Well, the upcoming show has the following vibe: "emo/ska theme. Songs with a teenage brat vibe."

I'd like to recommend something as a trumpet feature in the punk/emo/ska theme. A real trumpet feature. Can you folks recommend a tune for us to cover in that vein that might actually be fun to play as a trumpet soloist? The more horn the better!

Thanks for your help and suggestions!

Two ska possibilities. Simmer Down originally by Bob Marley and the Wailers, or Al Capone originally by Prince Buster.

Well covered by Ireland's Interskalactic.

I suspect that "emo/ska with a teenage brat vibe" refers to ska-inspired style that grew out the the punk and 2-tone scenes in the 1990's, rather than the original Jamaican ska of the 1950's and 1960's.

Prince Buster was part of that Jamaican scene, as was Marley in the pre-reggae days, but that music is quite different from what came to be called "ska" a few generations later. You might want to get some clarification from the singer.

Ska sounds like slightly groovy polka music

No good suggestions for a feature I'm afraid

"Everything Went Numb" by Streetlight Manifesto has two nice trumpet cadenzas which could have improvised sections before them to extend them.

Dick Cuthell was the trumpet player on a lot of the late 70's/ 80's 2-tone ska music mainly with the Specials.

for original 60's ska tunes the Skatalites have some good instrumentals

If you've ever wanted to double on trombone, ska is your opportunity!

Here's a few to gnaw on.

Reel Big Fish - "Sell Out" or "Brown Eyed Girl"

Streetlight Manifesto - pretty much all of their songs. Try "Kristina She Don't Know I Exist" or "Everything Went Numb"

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - "The Impression That I Get" or "Rascal King"

Interskalactic - "Simmer Down" or "Al Capone"

I don't know anything about punk/ska trumpet, but I would have liked to hear you do the trumpet solo on Miserlou. It's perhaps not so well known that Dick Dale plays quite a few instruments besides guitar. Here he is playing a mean trumpet in 2010:

I see some early Streetlight Manifesto songs have been brought up, but I'd like to call attention to their more recent work, as their current lead trumpet Matt Stewart is an incredibly strong player and is himself a clinician.

I play in a popular ska band in Seoul. We just changed our opener to The godfather theme. "Speak softly"? Famous song, can sound nice with a ska/punk beat on the back
