|
|
Hi All,
Is there a tweak for the Jupiter 1600is similar to the Bobby Shew Yamaha 8335?
Looking to open the blow a little. Any referral to the right tech would be appreciated
Thanks,
Brian |

The D slide is more open.
Get the upstroke alignment of the valves checked. In the other 1600i thread I posted the error of mine. Once corrected my horn responded better. Downstroke alignment is less crucial.
If the horn is 2nd hand make sure it's really clean inside. Smaller bore horns are more affected by dirt inside them.
Blow quieter and into the resonance or it will back up on you.
They are fine playing horns!! Good luck _________________ Maestro Arturo Sandoval on Barkley Microphones!

Check out George Rawlin 678-773-4625, website gRawlin.com.
He has done three of my horns and many, many for pros. A master player, he can change the blow to suit you and your mouthpiece. _________________ searching |

You can also check with Don Sawday - https://www.yelp.com/biz/sawday-and-holmes-music-signal-hill
Don was part of the design team for the 1600i and is Rogers "west coast tech".

FYI, remove the period at the end of that URL or you'll get an error.

Thanm you for all your help. In my original post I misidentified the Z horn model number. I appreciate not getting jumped on for that. I really like my Jupiter but it it feels like
a guilty pleasure. I have "better" trumpets including a Benge 3x+, a Callichio and an NY Bach but for quintet playing the 1600is is a very flexible player with a great sound. I would like it to be just slightly more open.
Thank you again. |

Have you thought about talking to a custom leadpipe maker?
Blackburn or Melk or some other maker might be able to design you somthing that helps get the horn a bit more open but keeps the bore and overall feel like you like. _________________ several horns |

I'd like to "throw my hat in the ring" and recommend our Osmun Precision Valve Alignment. for your Jupiter 1600i. Though not the same model, we aligned a Jupiter XO 1604 for one of their endorsing artists. Here's the amount of deviation before correction:
#1 up +.003" down -.023", #2 up +.010" down -.022", #3 up -.001" down +.014".
You can imagine how much more open your trumpet will blow if there's nearly this much misalignment through the passages of your Jupiter 1600i valves.
Same day service PVA appointments can be scheduled online here: https://osmunmusic.fullslate.com/
I hope this is helpful. _________________ James Becker

I have a 1600i that I'm on the verge of selling. Like you, I really like it for small-group playing.
For me, in other playing situations I don't think the root of the problem is that it's "stuffy," I think it's that the bell is optimized for projection at the expense of feedback. In loud playing situations (and I play in plenty of them) I can't hear myself, so I try to put more air through the horn and it isn't designed to be played that way so it ends up feeling "stuffy."
Go ahead and tell me to back off the air, "trust the projection," "play into the resonance," and all that. I have other trumpets that work just fine in the situations I play in, played the way I prefer to play.
I've never considered changing out the leadpipe, but have fantasized about bell swaps (what about a Yamaha 8310z bell?), but that would destroy the "guilty pleasure" point of the 1600i -- that it's an affordable alternative to "better" trumpets. _________________ J. Notso Nieuwguyski |

I always wondered what a 1600i would sound like with a buffed down bell. I saw one for sale in Phil Parkers I think, with a buffed bell. So I guess that didn't have the desired outcome for that player. So probably didn't work. But I always loved the liveliness of Benges, whose bells were pretty thin.
